Can Texas football's quarterback Quinn Ewers overcome his challenges for the rest of the season? That’s just one of the provocative questions we tackle in this episode as we discuss the exhilarating Texas vs. Vanderbilt game, where Texas clinched a narrow 27-24 victory. We're joined by CJ Vogel from On Texas Football, who shares his unique perspective on Nashville's vibe and the palpable enthusiasm of Longhorn fans at the game. We celebrate standout performances from players like Jelani McDonald and scrutinize the Texas defense's role in securing this important road win. There's also a candid discussion on the critical need to reduce penalties as we approach the bye week, a crucial time for recovery and strategic planning.

Quinn Ewers’ performance is put under the microscope, where we contrast his impressive stats with areas in need of improvement, such as interceptions and deep ball accuracy. CJ Vogel offers insights into the game's dynamics and the significant turnout of Texas fans at Vanderbilt’s home turf. We also explore how tips at the line of scrimmage can change game outcomes and the vital balance between statistical analysis and the eye test in evaluating a player's contribution. The conversation shifts to the larger college football landscape, where we consider Texas A&M's quarterback changes and the overall offensive line challenges faced by Texas.

Our final reflections include speculation on Power 12 rankings and humorous anecdotes, such as game-day antics and Johnny Manziel references. We discuss the inspirational role models who shaped our football aspirations, with heartfelt stories shared about the figureheads who inspired us to pursue greatness. Speaker 1:

These weeks are not easy, you know. When you get so emotionally invested into a game, like we were last week, and then you don't play your best, it's tough. It's tough on coaches, it's tough on a team to rebound and I think how many times have we seen a team lose a game like that and then they get beat again the next week because they're still going through it, through it? And I thought this game tonight was a culture, was a toughness win for us.

Speaker 3:

Stevie Lee, I have never experienced a game with any tackle football team which won the game on the road, but it felt like and there's verbiage used to which it felt like a loss. Is that what you're feeling too?

Speaker 4:

No, because, if you remember, I told you guys that Vandy was going to be a tough out. They're tough to play at home, so I understand them feeling that it was a loss, but I knew it was going to be tough. There are some things that we could have done better, but Vandy is not a bad football team.

Speaker 3:

They're a good tackle football team and that quarterback is something special and, dare I say it, I know his idol is Johnny Manziel, but he's very Johnny Manziel-esque. If you will Diego Pavia, he's done Texas put him away, won 27-24,. And we're about to dive deep into that and we've got a special VIP guest. This guy knows a lot about recruiting. He knows a lot about the great state of Texas and high school football talent and we just had a short conversation about the great Todd Dodge as well. He's from that area and he's also another partner of Stevie Lee. You know him real well. We're going to have a special guest. I like keeping people in suspense. Stevie, you ready, let's do it, let's ride.

Speaker 5:

So straight ahead and a bounce to the outside, and a physical tackle by Jelani McDonald, gain of one Alyssa.

Speaker 3:

What? He got a pop Diego came out of the tent, jelani McDonald again. Stevie uh, 27, 24. Texas beat Vanderbilt almost said Vandergrift High. I have no idea why I said that, but another game, it's a one little part that you know is SEC ready and that is the defense. And you saw it with a guy like Jelani McDonald who plays and Andrew McCuba couldn't play, and that's the side of your ball where you used to eat when you were a Texas defensive tackle.

Speaker 4:

Absolutely, man. I think the defense did really well. You know, there are some things that need to be tightened up a little bit. We had some pretty bad penalties on the defense and the offensive line, so we'll talk about all that, but the defense looked pretty good with me. Just got to tighten up a couple of things.

Speaker 3:

Tighten it up and you know, uh, get the, get the penalties down. That's one topic we're gonna hit up. And before we get going, be sure to like us on all of our social media platforms. And I am self-admitting that I am lazy on tiktok. I haven't updated now on three months and two weeks. It's almost four months here. But, tikt, we're coming for you at some point and you know we would not be able to do this without our family from Shreveport, Louisiana, also a presence in the great city of Austin and Central Texas, Hargrove Roofing and Stevie Lee man. I love the slogan, but I love it better when you say it.

Speaker 4:

Hargrove Roofing know who's on your roof 100% You'll know them.

Speaker 3:

They'll get to know you in a matter of five minutes, where you're going to trust them. So, texas winning on the road any road win is a great win for any program, regardless of how ugly or how bad the optics may have been. But you know what? I think we need to roll this new beautiful piece of video that we have. We got a special guest. I want to call him a VIP. He'll now be a VIP alumni in a matter of 25 seconds. Let's introduce our guy.

Speaker 2:

Road win over a ranked team. Good win for Texas, right, let's, let's get that point out of the way. Now they go to the bye. Then get healthy recoup. You got four games left in the regular season. Make the most of that here.

Speaker 3:

He is the new vip alumni of the stories inside the man cave podcast, cj vogel of on texas football, and I'm going to try to rearrange our boxes here because they're. I had the man Cave podcast, cj Vogel on Texas football, and I'm going to try to rearrange our boxes here because they're all over the damn place and this is not good TV. But CJ he's still in Nashville as we're recording this episode. Great view of downtown.

Speaker 2:

You're leaving in a matter of two hours, tell me a little bit about your stay and what you witnessed outside of football in Nashville. What a city. You know it's beautiful weather, you can see right behind me, not a cloud in the sky. I mean, I had a blast in Nashville, first time down here, getting to see Broadway. Obviously that was a big attraction for me, getting out to see, experience the town, experience the city. But no, it was wonderful, very clean, very. You know, know a lot of stuff to do and that's what I'm looking forward to, of course, coming on these road trips and you know ann arbor was a blast earlier this year and now, uh, nashville certainly living up to the hype and the expectation too.

Speaker 2:

But a lot of fun, good, good trip. To come away with a win too.

Speaker 3:

So cj, I know stevie's some questions for you, but we have your tweet up. Broadway is talking about the main attraction. Like 6th Street is to Austin, broadway is a playground, a single man's paradise, agreed.

Speaker 2:

It was a good one, good times.

Speaker 4:

CJ the commentators. While I was watching the game they said there was more burnt orange there than it was Vandy fans there. Is that true?

Speaker 2:

Oh yeah, I'm sure they showed the away sidelines.

Speaker 2:

But they have the Vanderbilt band, the Vanderbilt student section, on the away sidelines. That was the only section only part of that entire stands that were not burnt orange. I'd say it was probably 65-35. Texas burnt orange. Even on the home side. There's a number of those splotches that were all orange. It really did feel like one of those late-round high school football games where teams traveled to a neutral site. You got one side manning the home sideline, then the other school manning the away sideline and it's just, you know, a 50-50 split on either side. This one's a little bit more in favor of the longhorn.

Speaker 3:

Wow, cj, before we get rolling, you guys need to follow him on Twitter. He's a great follow, very insightful, a good, healthy balance of comedy, intel, whatnot. He'll make make you laugh, but he's a good follow. Good he has really good statistical information.

Speaker 2:

But uh, briefly, just tell your story how you ended up at on texas football yeah, I, I covered the texas baseball team for the uh, for the daily texan whenever I was in school. Uh, it was the one year where you know Texas baseball did not make the Big 12 tournament.

Speaker 2:

So, it was a pretty long year and so, unfortunately, I got my foot in the door, started covering some sports and then, you know, started working a little bit for a company called the Football Brainiacs, covering Texas and Oklahoma, and then, you know, went on Texas football, you know, really started making some moves there. Bobby reached out and said, hey, we need someone that's a little bit younger, that can come in and connect. And I'm like, let's do it, I love it, I'm all for it and it's been a blast. I mean, of course it certainly helps when you're covering a team that's winning a lot, and right now Texas again top ten team in the country, seven and one Some things to clean up. But winning certainly helps and it's been a fun job ever since. No doubt about that.

Speaker 3:

Well, let's dive into the game. We're going to roll a piece of footage where we you know Vanderbilt started quick, but then Quinn Ewers, in the offense, did this.

Speaker 5:

Third and eight for Ewers Got man coverage to his slot receiver. It's caught over the shoulder by DeAndre Moore Back-to-back scoring drives for the Longhorns.

Speaker 3:

Stevie and CJ. Quinn Ewers 27-37, 288 yards passing, three TDs and a couple of interceptions. Stevie well, we need to get CJ in because he's got to hop on a flight, and then we'll go CJ then Stevie. Cj in because he's got to hop on a flight, and then we'll go CJ then Stevie. But you know, I've never seen a guy produce and grade out pretty high, receive so much criticism. I mean, why do you think that is?

Speaker 2:

It's. You know the offense did stall in the second half. You're the quarterback, you get the praise, you get the criticism. You see two interceptions by the names. And you know, for box score merchants out there and folks that maybe don't really go through play-by-play and understand why each play doesn't succeed or fails, you know it's easy to just sit back and kind of blame the quarterback. And of course, for Texas, specifically after the last Oklahoma game and after the Georgia game, I mean offense, let's be honest, was pretty bad. And it started with quinn wasn't good, right, you know, especially against georgia. It was a good bounce back for me in terms of what quinn did on the field.

Speaker 2:

And again, both passes were tipped at the line of scrimmage, the second one probably a little worse than the first. But tips are, you know, they're so unique you never know where that ball is going. You never know what the end result will be. And for Texas, again, texas deflected a pass at the line of scrimmage that ended up being a touchdown for Vanderbilt. They deflected another pass later on in an interception for Texas. So it could go two ways If either of those balls hit the ground and Texas moves on with their possession. This isn't a conversation, but because that ball just goes straight up in the air and it lands in the hands of a Vanderbilt defender. Now you're sitting back thinking, okay, we got an issue. And I don't think that was the case at all.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, I thought the same thing, cj. It's tough on me, man, because yeah, we had those two interceptions, but the game and the numbers that yours put up, they're winning numbers, right, but when you have the eye test also, you have to look at that as well. So there were some sacks that he took off of the line, that sliding to the right when somebody should be sliding left, you know, or a running back should stay in and pick up the blitzer. So those type of things kind of concern me. I know we just showed a deep ball for yours, right there.

Speaker 3:

but CJ, he hates yours deep ball.

Speaker 4:

There is no non-existent deep ball, man. There's no deep ball from yours, man. So and the commentators during the game? You didn't hear it, cj, but everyone was talking about yak yards after catch and we're doing a great job of getting these guys the ball in space so they can make the play Right. Yours is not making the play downfield. You know we're calling these. You know it's a 25-yard catch. Well, he caught it five yards out and then ran another 20 yards. You know what I'm saying. So when you look at the eye test, the numbers look great, but the eye test I don't know man.

Speaker 2:

No, and that's fair right. You know I've been calling for more deep shots, more intermediate throws. You know I even made the comparison and kind of the desire to see some Jameis Winston this week from Quinn Ewers, and that's not to say that just be reckless with the ball down the field. Quinn normally isn't reckless with the football. He's very good at protecting the rock. Historically at Texas. What I wanted to see was just that blind trust, right, that he would make the throw and that his wide receiver would win a one-on-one. Just trust your guy. You got a Ryan Wingo out there. You got a Matthew Golden. We've seen his hands this year. Right, he just made that one-handed catch in the end zone With an Isaiah Bond healthy. I hope that you see him just kind of huck it up. Give your guy a chance, because you don't know what's going to happen. But you do know that the reward of making a play down the field is much greater than what is expected whenever you dump it down to a tight end two yards down the field. So I wanted to see more of that coming in. I was very happy to see that Quinn Ewers found DeAndre Moore on a route that he audibled in the middle of the motion before the snap. That that's the sign of a third year quarterback. That's what you want to see from Quinn Ewers. But I want to see more. I think Texas fans want to see more.

Speaker 2:

But at the end of the day and this is where I kind of find myself I feel like at times on an island with Quinn. When you complete 17 straight passes and you're north of 200 yards in the first half alone you got three touchdown passes to your tally something's working. It doesn't matter where that ball is going. You know it's one thing when you play a Georgia team and you're checking down. You're checking down and all of a sudden you're averaging what about half a yard? Two yards per reception on those plays was moving the rock very easily in that first half. I don't have an issue with that Second half. We can talk about. But it felt good to me.

Speaker 3:

Well, after the game, you were there at the post-game press conference.

Speaker 2:

I mean.

Speaker 3:

Sark you can tell To me. He's very transparent and acknowledges everything he knows. Ewers has not been the same since that injury, but Ewers also, in my opinion, has always been consistent with a turnover, an INT, and then, in a quick sound bite from Sark, he's pleased moving forward. And this is like a five-second response about it.

Speaker 1:

Like I said, if we can get that version of Quinn Eers for the rest of the way, we'll be okay.

Speaker 3:

Does he mean in totality of the game or what he saw first half or second half?

Speaker 2:

That's probably the golden question right there.

Speaker 2:

I think one of the big things with Quinn is we've been wanting him to put the cape on, take over football games, be the guy that is the reason for Texas winning and you know there have been stints this year and during Quinn's career where you watch him for about a quarter and a half, two quarters, and yeah, that's the quarterback Texas wanted whenever they got him and knew what his ceiling can be. But then you see, you know, spurts in the second half where things just don't go right and it's not all Quinn's fault. Again, you know, penalties weren't on Quinn, you know, and they stalled all those drives in the second half. But you want to see them overcome that. Be the leader, be the guy that's the undisputed best football player on the field and it's very hit or miss with them.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, we had three or four holding calls that stalled three or four drives man it was.

Speaker 3:

It was really frustrating. Well, that's, that was huge. I mean, if you look at it, there were 10 and you and I, cj, were talking about this and I couldn't wait to get stevie on board because we didn't even text or have a conversation during the game. But 10 penalties for 108 yards, cj, I mean that's got to be one of the worst displays or the consistencies you don't want to see in a game. I mean, they weren't just plays you mentioned, they were big, explosive plays that were negated.

Speaker 2:

Right, no, and the penalties too right. Not only are you taking away positive yardage, but it's not a false start, it's not an illegal formation, it's holdings, it's pass interference, it's targeting. You know those are 10, 15-yard penalties that would end up being positive chunk yards for you and you know it's very frustrating in that regard. You know we can talk about offense and the holdings there, but defensively pass interference on fourth down, targeting on a third down in which extends a drive, both resulting in points for Vanderbilt. That's frustrating against a good team and Vanderbilt is a good football team. Ten penalties for 108 yards on the road against a ranked team. You were lucky to come away with the win most times.

Speaker 3:

Oh, yeah, most definitely.

Speaker 4:

One of those targeting took points off the board. For us that was a pick six Right On Vernon right. So we really got to tighten that up and it was a bang-bang play. In slow motion you feel like he could have pulled up, but in real time he was already going and hit the guy in the head. But you know, the guy he didn't try, vernon did not try to do that. But we got to find some kind of way to roll off of that, you know, because it took a pig six away from your teammate.

Speaker 5:

A lot of big plays.

Speaker 3:

A lot of big plays and you know, sark, just look at his body language right now he's trying to be level-headed, but acknowledge the elephant in the room that these penalties were just damaging. And honestly, guys, if they take away half those penalties, we're not even talking about a close game.

Speaker 1:

Gunner had one. I know there was a few more in there, but we've got to find a way not to go backwards, because it's hard to overcome first and 20, second and 19. That's difficult over time, and so we were able to get away with that tonight, but we can't make a living doing that.

Speaker 3:

Not make a living. Texas will have plenty of time to correct this. Seven and one overall. Three and one in the SEC. Going to the bye week, cj, when you look at those penalties, I know a bye week. They're going to start prepping for Florida and Stevie, you can talk about this firsthand during these bye weeks. What do you do? I mean, what do you guys see? How do they correct this? I mean, is it the officiating crew or are these legit mistakes that are going to be called by every crew?

Speaker 4:

From the replays. These were legit mistakes, so they're probably offensive line. I feel like they may be overthinking some stuff right now. We had this problem against Georgia when Georgia was shifting. We kept jumping right. So for the last two weeks we've had offensive line jumping, false starts and things like that.

Speaker 4:

And another thing I'm seeing when I watch the game is some of these offensive linemen are having tunnel vision of just that man in front of them and not looking off onto the linebacker coming up right. So they're having tunnel vision and just locked in on one person and not blocking a hole. Uh, you know they're running. They're. If they're rushing for the, the whole six, they're not seeing the whole six as a whole. So I think Flood got to get in there and actually really, really hone in on these guys in the offseason or in the bye week. Something's got to give on the offensive line. They got the talent. Man to man. They are strong, they can do it, but playing together as a unit is what they got to get better at. You're supposed to get better at that as the season goes on. It's been some kind of disconnect and some kind of stall right before that Georgia game and we got to figure that out in this bye week.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, cj, you're an insider. I mean, you got the pulse? I mean, do you think that, by any chance, this is just me throwing this out here? I'm just assuming this may be a factor, but do you get the sense, maybe, that that old line is pressing and not, you know, like Sark says, trusting their training, so to speak?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it did feel like they were pressing. You know holdings normally, or an extension of trying to make a block longer than it needs to be right, and that's someone wanting to do more than what they're asked. When a play reaches the outside, you're, you've done your job, you've blocked your guy holdings, you know they're and they can depend on uh, the, the refereeing crew, obviously. But when you have as bad as a game as the offensive line did against Georgia, you play a team like Vanderbilt expecting to dominate right, you were a team that was expecting to be in a Joe Moore conversation. You just get whooped. How do you bounce back?

Speaker 2:

Well, I think they tried to do it a little bit too much in that regard and that's kind of where you saw some of these holding calls come in and Vanderbilt again, very scrappy, tough football team. They got scholarship guys too, so it's not like it was supposed to be a walk in the park. They're an SEC opponent, let's remember that. But even beyond that, the targeting call and Kim Williams had a 15-yard personal foul in a play where he just let his emotions get the best of him. It's 30 yards and a lost player for the duration of the game. That's all mental, that's all mental. You can't have that against an Arkansas on the road, a Texas A&M on the road where momentum is going to be so key.

Speaker 3:

Well, speaking of A&M, they're number one in the SEC, 5-0. Last night they make the quarterback change, and I mean this video of Marcel Reed guys this, I think he may be the answer Out of keeper.

Speaker 5:

He pulled it and scores One play, touchdown drive for the Aggies, play momentum and cut into this lead With some tempo here. Keeper Touchdown Marcel Reed. The magic continues and the Aggies stretch the lead.

Speaker 3:

All right, I'm not trying to get ahead of myself, but, stevie, I know you were undefeated against A&M, but Texas A&M is ascending quickly. Conor Wegman I don't know if he's going to be benched for good, but I think Reed is the second coming of Reggie McNeil, but in the right offensive system. I haven't seen him throw enough, but he gives them a chance not only to win the SEC but play well in the CFP. Meaning my whole point is I'm getting ahead of myself. I'm saying that that game in College Station could be for a spot in the SEC title game, as we talked about back in August.

Speaker 4:

We did talk about that. First of all, let me say the black uniforms are stupid. They look stupid and that's not your color. So take those stupid uniforms off. Second of all, they, you know, even the sun shines on a dog's ass, right. So they're doing good right now.

Speaker 4:

You know I'm a Longhorn, everyone knows I'm a longhorn, everyone knows I'm a longhorn, so I can't say too much nice things about the Aggies, but they did play a good game last night, but the uniform looks stupid. Okay, I'm an LSU guy, man, I always want LSU to do well, but you know, I don't know man, and they had a long ways to go and I think they got some push, and so you know, hats off to them. But it's still a long season. We still got some stuff to do. They still got some stuff to do. They still got some stuff to do. Their quarterback looks good, his play looks good, but you know, depending on who's in there, our defense can handle anybody. You know what I mean. So y'all talk about it. Because their uniform looks so stupid, I turned the game off.

Speaker 3:

Well, cj, I got to get your two cents. I mean I want to go back to the Texas stats before we hear Mike Elko, but your take on the quarterback change at A&M.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it was a spark that they needed. You know, and I think that was one of the big concerns that A&M had coming into the year is, you know, colin Klein historically needs a running quarterback. That's what fits his system the best and Marcel Reed certainly looked the part against LSU. What's really interesting for me is, you know, do they go back to Conor Wegman, as y'all mentioned? You know that's going to be an interesting conversation because you know he's played early in the year, got hurt. Reed came in, played well and then went back to him. Are they going to do it again now that injuries aren't necessarily the reason for his benching? I think that's going to be really telling over the next week or two leading up to Texas. But A&M, again, I mean they've always had talent. The thing now is they're playing disciplined football, they're playing within themselves. That wasn't the case under Jimbo Fisher and you're seeing it show up on the field as a result.

Speaker 3:

So, stevie, no, you're absolutely right, they're a much better coach team than they were under Jimbo Fisher. Um, stevie mentioned the defense could handle them. I mean, before we move on to, I got, I want to play that soundbite from uh Elko, but here's the yardage from uh Texas defeating Vanderbilt. I, I could not pull up this graphic five minutes ago. I tried, I tried. I don't know. I don't know what's going on, but Texas had almost 400 yards of offense but they held Vanderbilt to 269. Vanderbilt outrushed Texas. Vanderbilt had more turnovers than Texas. But here's the key part to what each of your points about the O-line they had four quarterback sacks. But here's the one that really, really is eye-opening to me Tackles for loss. Vanderbilt had nine, seven more than Texas. Cj. I mean, they were being disruptive on both sides.

Speaker 2:

That's CJ. I mean they were being disruptive on both sides. Yeah, that's kind of the edge, you see, when you evaluate Diego Pavia and Quinn Evers is one can run and the other one really can't right, especially in the pocket. That's the big key, for Vanderbilt is staying ahead of the sticks, staying ahead of the chains, and you know three yards for them is a really good play. That's what they feed off of. We saw them attempt fourth down. You know three yards for them is a really good play. That's what they feed off of. We saw them attempt fourth. You put down a uh, you know attempts several times throughout that game. They were successful on a few of them. One resulted in a touchdown and that all extends from Diego Pavia's ability to be mobile, back behind the line of scrimmage and tough to bring down. That's for sure.

Speaker 4:

They got a good running attack and it's certainly a creative challenge that I don't think Texas had seen necessarily this year as well the other challenge was uh, when you talk about Vanderbilt's offenses, they, they threw a lot of sets at us, yeah and so, um, it made me realize that those kids are pretty smart over there, uh, kind of like Clint Smart. Uh, here in Austin, man.

Speaker 3:

Oh wait, man, I don't deserve that type of credit, but I'll take it any day, hey.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, so they threw a lot of sets at us, and so there was a couple of plays in there that I saw that we were still trying to figure it out as the ball was being snapped.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, that's absolutely right and sorry for the delay on that. I had a little technical difficulty, but that would have been perfect timing when CJ was talking about that and, of course, stevie talking about the defense. But I'm trying to figure. I have an idea. When Mike Elko was in the post-game press conference he made some comments and I just kind of want to get some confirmation from you guys on who he was taking a shot at right here.

Speaker 6:

And this is a real program. It's not fake. It's not a politician running this program talking fast and BSing everybody. This is a real program and, for all the recruits out there, this is a real place and if you want to be really good at football, this is a really good place to be.

Speaker 3:

Is he talking about Kelly at LSU, or is he talking? Is that a shot to Sark?

Speaker 4:

I don't know, man, I don't feel like Sark has been a politician. I don't either. Yeah, I feel like Sark should be more of a politician, I think, but no, I don't feel like it was coming towards us. I don't know who he's talking about, man.

Speaker 2:

It felt almost like it was directed at the former coach. Jimbo. Yeah, that's kind of where my brain went and of course that was kind of the whole thing is. You know, they get all these talented football players, they get to campus and everything off the football field becomes a priority, and now that's not necessarily the case. Again, they're playing disciplined football and they're coached very well.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Good point.

Speaker 4:

CJ. That's why you're here, man. Think outside the box.

Speaker 3:

That's why you're here. That's why CJ had to be on this episode and probably needs to be on more often. We got to call. Hargrove and get them on the payroll. Hey, it was 105,000 plus there. Great atmosphere. There were some arrests made at Kyle Field on, you know when you get alcohol involved. But how about this? Section 336,? Subject arrested for possession of Coke White powder. Come on, Possession of Coke White powder.

Speaker 2:

Come on Possession of Coke man.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, and then you knew it was coming somebody with a burner account. It's good to see Johnny Manziel back in town. That's wrong man. That's wrong.

Speaker 4:

Oh my goodness, oh man.

Speaker 3:

So we're going to pick up the pace here. So OU lost at Ole Miss. They brought Arnold back in, but they had a little interruption in the game. This kind of just signifies the season that OU is having. Nothing can happen. That's right, even when you've got a little bit of momentum.

Speaker 5:

An additional delay. You've got a little visitor on the field. He'll score. Might score a touchdown. Oh yeah, touchdown. I love the guy who's pointing to the squirrel, as if the squirrel then knows the directions.

Speaker 3:

Oh, this is where I go hey, the student body may be the best in oxford, mississippi, in Oxford, mississippi, but, cj, I think OU needs more talent, as the squirrel possesses.

Speaker 2:

I think you might be right. Especially offensively, that team really doesn't have a direction, and that's as lonesome as it can be in the locker room is when you just walk in every day to practice or games or whatever and just know that the hope that you thought you would have coming into the year is gone. That's kind of where Oklahoma is at the moment.

Speaker 3:

Stevie, I've got one for you. Byu they're still undefeated. You laugh at me because I always include them in our power rankings. They're undefeated. But you guys pay attention to this video, this fake field goal. Watch the holder act like a center and they converted on this. This is pretty. I've seen we've all seen a lot of fakes, but check this one out, look closely.

Speaker 5:

From as long as 54 this season and they fake it. It's fairing around the edge. He's got options and he keeps it. That's a BYU first down, A beautiful play call, and they get the fourth down conversion again on an eight-yard run.

Speaker 3:

CJ, I'm in. And Stevie, are we buying BYU? Yet I'm defeated. I'm not. I'm not buying.

Speaker 4:

I'm defeated, I'm not. I'm not buying. I'm not buying, I think. I mean it is halfway. We're more than halfway through the season now, so it's hard for me to buy. Let's say that I don't know.

Speaker 2:

Okay. They find ways to win. I mean that Oklahoma State game. They were dead to rights, came back to win at home. They won it pretty big again. I mean tough thing to do, just to keep winning, and right now they're finding ways to do it. So so they uh, so they lose, gotta buy them that's right, and so your guys.

Speaker 3:

So we go from the mormons to the baptist and baylor. Uh, they had 345 yards rushing against the fighting gundies. I think oklahoma state has tapped out, but sonnyches, who's trying to get it back? Recapture that magic of two or three seasons ago. This is very cringeworthy. I love it celebrating with the team, but this is a little bit weird to me. He was riding a saddle in the locker room. This could not help recruiting, in my opinion. What the hell is going on there?

Speaker 2:

Pause. Yeah, hold on, hold on Pause, stop Pause.

Speaker 4:

That didn't look good, bro. That didn't look good. It looked like you've been there before.

Speaker 3:

Hey, I'm going to get criticized, but you know everyone's got a damn pole these days. But the Power 12, it's not legitimately like how the CFP is structured, but the Power 12, I take it. We take consideration schedule strength, head to head wins on the road away, whatnot it's time to reveal post week nine. And I think we can all predict it. It's not. It's not real hard at the moment. Outro Music Okay, so I think Texas moves up one Ohio State, I don't know. They found a way to survive against unranked Nebraska CJ. Who in this? Because I think we're going to see a lot of movement here, especially the top eight or nine, in the next two or three weeks. Are you buying Ohio State at all? I mean, I think I thought they were the most talented team entering this season.

Speaker 2:

I did too, and I think that's the reason why I'm going to continue to keep stock on them, because they have so much talent defensively but they've just not played up to it. I think that's the reason why I'm going to continue to keep stock on them, because they have so much talent defensively but they've just not played up to it. I think it starts for them specifically with the quarterback. I was a Will Howard buyer. I liked Will Howard, I liked that running game. I figured he's a guy that can protect the football and just kind of manage what needs to be managed. And that offense just hasn't been consistent this year. And you know, you got two really talented running backs. You figure, worse comes to worse, they'll just hand the ball off, you know, let those guys cook and it's been ugly so far this year.

Speaker 3:

Stevie, who, in that top 10, and I'll pull it up for you are the top 12, the power 12. Who do?

Speaker 4:

you see, could really make a push here in this latter part of the season. Man, I really like it. I was just looking it up, what Indiana's doing right now, man.

Speaker 7:

Oh yeah.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, I really like what they're doing, and if we're not careful they can come up and sneak up behind us as well. So are they still undefeated? They're undefeated right.

Speaker 4:

Eight and nine Tied for the best start in school history, yeah, so that's kind of a sleeper, that nobody just kind of creeped up and you know what needs to happen. Also, for if the Aggies are smart, they need to go out there and try to get. I guess they got a new coach. I'm sorry, not the Aggies OU. If OU was smart, they need to go and grab this coach from Indiana man.

Speaker 3:

Can't do bad. So, speaking of A&M, clearly passed the eye test for being a top 10 team. They move in to our Power 12 top 10. Iowa State's going to run out of luck magic. They're going to take a setback. Indiana's number eight. I think Notre Dame moves back into it. After they pummeled what was once an undefeated Navy team I mean CJ I was hoping to see an undefeated Army-Navy game and really throw a wrench into everything.

Speaker 2:

I think most of the country was hoping for, see an undefeated army navy game and really throw a wrench into everything. I I think most of the country was hoping for that. Right, and notre dame certainly had other plans. Uh, for notre dame, how how much do you look at that? Week two loss, northern illinois, and just you know, start picking yourself right. What a what a bad loss that was. I'm glad to see indiana getting some respect here as well, but it's gonna be interesting to see how the end of that you know 10, 11, 12 spots fill out, because LSU, I know they took a loss there. They were looking like they found some rhythm. Kansas State top team in the Big 12. Byu, you know Iowa State that's an interesting group of teams right there all vying for what could be.

Speaker 3:

You know a back end of the the playoff coming out in a few weeks, I think, I think the big 12 to me is much stronger than people give them credit for, and I still say to this day they were still as good a conference in when texas and oklahoma were still members of it. All right, we're going to shift to non-sports material, and this probably is a set of dad jokes, but we like to pull up random photos and create our own captions. All right, cj, since you're going to be the short timer here, you've got to get on a plane soon. But it's voting season. We all do it just for the stickers. I voted Well. We got a cat here that has a sticker that says I vomited. What's the thought bubble that could be associated with this?

Speaker 2:

I vomited. That's clever. I mean, that's just watching Texas in the second half, on offense. That's exactly what I was thinking.

Speaker 4:

That's a good one, CJ.

Speaker 7:

That's a good one.

Speaker 4:

That was perfect.

Speaker 3:

How about you, Stevie? You got one.

Speaker 4:

No, I'm going to go with CJ. Man, that was perfect. Yeah, that second half it stunk it up a little bit, man. So yeah, yeah. That was the Texas second half.

Speaker 3:

I think yeah, cj, you nailed it. You've dropped the mic on that one because we both of us don't have anything to add of any value. I mean, there was a lot of coughing up fur balls in the second half for that guy, and that's why I? Said he vomited CJ Vogel man. Go follow him on Twitter, seriously, you'll be better for it, you'll feel more intelligent and you'll laugh a lot. Good stuff, brother. We appreciate you making time and safe travels home, absolutely guys, Thank you very much.

Speaker 2:

Y'all do a hell of a job and I appreciate you having me on.

Speaker 4:

We'll see you tomorrow on the winning drive. Cj, the winning drive, that's right.

Speaker 3:

On Texas football the legends.

Speaker 2:

Every.

Speaker 3:

Monday Every Monday Go follow on Texas football too. Good guys, great Americans, fine Americans. You got them all, CJ, as we hit the break. Man, safe travels, you need anything? Let us know. We got to coordinate more and do more projects like this together. Safe travels from that beautiful city in Nashville. We'll see you on the other side of this break, that's right.

Speaker 7:

Here at Hardware Roofing we try to think outside the box to kind of get the creative juices flowing. So I brought in my friend Stevie Lee, former defensive tackle for the Texas Longhorns. He's going to help the team strategize, really motivate them. Light a fire.

Speaker 4:

This guy's going to block down. This guy's going to block down. You put your butt into the guard and that way my Mike Linebacker gets free to do what.

Speaker 7:

Not only are they going to learn a thing or two, but they're going to also leave with a great attitude and a bunch of smiles on their faces.

Speaker 8:

I'm sorry. What does this have to do with roofing exactly? Get out Right now.

Speaker 4:

I said get out.

Speaker 7:

For me, that's what it's all about. It's just having fun making our employees have a great time. Hargrove Roofing Know who's on your roof.

Speaker 3:

This is JJ Gotch, ceo of the Austin Gamblers, and segment two of Stories Inside the man Cave is JJ Gotch, ceo of the Austin Gamblers, and segment two of Stories Inside the man Cave is next Stevie Lee. How about? Jj Gotch? And the Austin Gamblers brought home the I just forgot the name of the league man PBR PBR professional bull riding, but it's team bull riding. Brought the whole damn thing back home. The championship PBR PBR professional bull riding, but it's team bull riding. Brought the champ, the whole damn thing back home. The championship JJ guys. Congrats to the gamblers.

Speaker 3:

Hey, it is Halloween time and you still have kids. I know that they're older, but everyone loves to celebrate Halloween and we're so used to lights at home synchronized to Christmas music. But down in H-Town they're a little different. In H-Town and Houston Texas, they God, they've had some old school rap artists which survived the generations, and transcendence is the word I'm looking for. But how about this? This may be perhaps the best Halloween getup of any house and is all a tribute to the city of Houston A better way, a better way, a better way yeah, big ballin' smashin' makin' my ends Smokin', big gettin' in the bins.

Speaker 3:

Big ballin'. Look at that. Want to be a baller. Shot caller Lil' Troy.

Speaker 4:

When that song comes on, I remember me and my teammates at the drink downtown 6th Street having a good old time singing to that song all together, locked arms together. We were a team back then, man. You couldn't tell us nothing, we were brothers and a team back then, man. That brings back memory, that song and a bunch of other Houston songs Southside oh my goodness, yes, oh my God, houston, yeah, it's good stuff.

Speaker 3:

There's a lot of talent coming out of Houston, still to this day.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 3:

That was about the turn of the century 2000,. Right there, but how creative was that? All the major highways and laser lights on the garage door, the Halloween tree with the mouth singing lights on the garage door, the halloween tree with the mouth singing to uh, little troy, and those lights, and then the logos of the sports teams texans, astros, um, and the rockets and a lot of history but.

Speaker 3:

I I'm still a dallas guy, I'm an austin texas boy. But shout out to that home, that owner of that home who put that time into that, and shout out to H-Town Rap Music it's deep Tradition rich. All right, my friend TikTok in the man cave, we're going to stick to the holidays here. You've seen these, but these wine bottle holders, santa, you'll see what I'm talking about here. Santa boy, you just wonder. It gives new meaning to ho, ho, ho. All right, we'll.

Speaker 8:

No, no, no, no no no, no, santa's being a ho ho, ho, ho, ho, ho ho. To the comments. I beg your finest pardon. I know I was shook. Do they have one for a smaller bottle? Come on, man only gets out one night a year. Sarah's gotta pay the bills, not me running to home goods to find this bad boy for a white elephant gift. Make trip to home goods noted like. Does mrs claus know what he be doing? I mean she's entertaining the elves while he's gone. Just saying sometimes I'm so proud of my and home goods, the gift that keeps on giving. Even even santa isn't safe from inflation.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, sometimes you got to go to the comments on social media man All the time.

Speaker 3:

Especially when a made-up Santa's deep throat in the water a wine bottle.

Speaker 4:

Exactly what he was doing.

Speaker 3:

Oh God, god forgive me. Hey, man, tell me something good. All right, my brother. Big thanks to cj vogel of on tex Football that group with Bobby Burton, you know, and they do a great job. Shout out to CJ, get back home safely from Nashville. And I'm not just saying this to just amp him up and promote him. He's a great follow on Twitter and social media and On Texas Football, you know Babers was with them. All of them do a great job, but CJ man, shout out to him for making time while he's in Nashville, about ready to get on a flight.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, that's good stuff, man, that's good stuff. Thanks, cj.

Speaker 4:

Hey, tell me something, good, my brother, anything man, very, very unfortunate that I had to go to a funeral yesterday, but it was so inspiring to know that my cousin touched so many people, man. So I, what I took away from the funeral is I need to be a better cousin. I need to be a better husband, a better father, a better nephew, a better son, because my cousin was that guy for me, for all of us, man. So you know, it was sad and unfortunate and I'm going to grieve a little bit for my cousin, but from the stories that I got, it's been. He lived a hell of a life short life, at 51, he's gone, but he lived a hell of a life impacting other people.

Speaker 4:

Man, his neighbor came up to the podium and said something. He said Andre was nice to everybody, he was cool with everybody, he'd do anything for anybody, even the old white neighbor is what he said. So I also need to be a better, uh, neighbor as well. So, um, that's my inspiration, man just be the best person that you can be. Uh, pour into other people. We're in this world together, man, we're gonna bump into each other, you know so. Say excuse me and then learn that person's story, you know so. Uh, just that's my inspiration guys love on each other. No, get to know each other and not judge each other. Let's do that.

Speaker 3:

Stevie, that was well said, man. You, you always deliver. Uh, not poetic but profound, and it's sad that you and I, what we all do, we all learn through death yeah and love you, man. I'm sorry you had to experience a loss I appreciate it, man, and I'm sorry for you and your family.

Speaker 3:

that is young, that's my age, but we all have those few people in our lives that are, uh, impactful and make us see the the world and life a little different. Um, you know who's really good about that is our buddy Norm. Yeah, he's delivering those nuggets and you know it makes me think as great a time as it is this time of year to kind of play off of that. You know I know I'm a big dude. I stress communication. You know I know I'm a big dude.

Speaker 3:

I stress communication. And just because you're in a hurry, don't just assume other person or who all these people understand communicating. If you really care about this person, communicate exactly what's on your mind and off your heart.

Speaker 4:

Yeah.

Speaker 3:

You may not have that opportunity.

Speaker 5:

Absolutely.

Speaker 3:

Or miscommunication happens. A little bitterness may happen or you may never see or hear from that person again. That's the beauty of it, man, and again I'm sorry you lost an individual like that in your life.

Speaker 4:

It's all good. You know the physical I always. This is how I comfort myself. The physical body is not here, but he's always in my heart. He was my inspiration of playing college football. He played college football at Southern University in Baton Rouge and when us as a family went to go drop him off, you know I was seven years younger than him, so I was like middle school and I was like, wow, I want to do this. You know, I was looking up and looking around like I want to do this and I somehow landed at the University of Texas. He's a huge LSU fan, but I like to think that his second team was the University of Texas, because his little cousin went there.

Speaker 3:

Oh he is. I know I haven't met him. That's funny you bring that up. I had a lot of role models and as we age I probably should. You know who was a role model of mine and they don't know it. They inspire because they're good people, because I was a big Longhorn fan growing up Eric Metcalf and Lance Gunn.

Speaker 4:

Oh, that's cool.

Speaker 3:

Looked up to them and they were ungodly talented, much thousand percent better than I could have ever been. But it pushed me to be better in everything I did, even though I was averaging best on the football field. But I loved. I mean, I didn't I'm not going to say idolize, they motivated me.

Speaker 4:

Yeah.

Speaker 3:

It's people like that. And then there's a couple of coaches we can go different types of directions who were inspired me yeah, yeah, it's people like that. And then there's a couple of coaches we can go different types of directions who were inspired me yeah, yeah, to do bigger and better things. Man Stevie great episode. And man it's good to have CJ on with us CJ Vogel great guy. And man, when you're having fun, things just go by way too fast here. And to the great city of Shreveport, louisiana, the birthplace of the Stevie Lee and the home of Hargrove Roofing. And to the city of my college alma mater, nacogdoches, texas, the paradise in the pines, a one hour west of the Louisiana border. And to the great city of Austin, texas, and the great state Austin is my hometown, of course. And to the entire Stevie Lee family and the OG man Cave boys, that being Hardball Harz, big Mike and the Coach Mo. What do we tell them, stevie Lee?

Speaker 7:

We out, we out. You see the drippy I'm fitted up.

Speaker 4:

I'm in my car, in a Gideon I said get out.
