Ep 423: Coffee with Clynch Unity, Respect, and Dialogue: Lessons from Football and Women's Rights Discourse
What if our nation could glean invaluable lessons from the dynamics of a football team? Robert Griffin III, former Baylor quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner, profoundly connects the diverse unity found within a football team to the very fabric of America. Join me, Shawn Clynch, as we kick off this episode of Coffee with Clynch by exploring his thought-provoking insights. In a landscape marked by political division, Griffin's message serves as a heartening reminder that our strength as a nation comes from our collective efforts and shared goals. As we reflect on his words, we also consider their relevance in our current political climate, especially following the recent presidential election.
Shifting gears, we confront the heated discourse surrounding women's reproductive rights, a topic that has ignited strong reactions nationwide. With the reversal of Roe versus Wade, there's an urgent need for respectful, empathetic dialogue in a time rife with disrespect and ignorance. Through personal reflections and social media observations, I emphasize the importance of understanding and mature conversations, particularly as they pertain to women's rights over their bodies. This episode aims not only to raise awareness but also to foster a community where differing opinions can exist alongside mutual respect, encouraging thoughtful and compassionate exchanges on societal issues that impact us all.

you Well, good morning. It has been a minute since we have had an installment of Coffee with Clinch and, on that note, raise your favorite mugs Cup of Joe. Good thing to get this Saturday morning rolling. Yeah, episode 423. I am Sean Clinch, the host of Stories Inside the man Cave, and my brain is not moving quickly this morning. But hey, with that what's in here, we're going to get it rolling this morning. But before we get moving on with this, I definitely want you to like, follow, subscribe for free to our YouTube page and follow and like and share each of our social media pages. And, worth noting, I have not updated tiktok in over three months. And big shout out to our sponsors jim saxon, state farm insurance agency, hardgrove roofing know who's on your roof and, of course, dirty Martin's place, an iconic Austin original and, to my left, honest plumbing and air where a handshake still means something one thing that I wanted to point out.
Speaker 1:One of my favorite times a year hoodie weather. It's great to get up in the morning and put one of those on, but warms up in the afternoon those, those are my favorite types of day, just FYI. So coffee with Clench. It's usually a topic or an episode about something that is inspiring positive hot topic issues. Then we evolve into sports Well, something that is really even the side of it the 2024 presidential election.
Speaker 1:Now, there were a lot of offices, from the president down to judicial, to senators, house of Representatives, everyone in Congress, to you get down to your county city mayor. It was a big, big election for a lot of people here in Austin, most definitely. But I saw a tweet by the former Baylor quarterback, heisman Trophy winner, rg3, robert Griffin III. I had a lot of thoughts and then I saw his tweet Because this is something that I wanted to talk about and that resonates with Everybody he talked about. You know, there's a lot of divisiveness, probably the most divisive Presidential election in American Political history. There's a lot of people who are not happy Because Donald Trump won the election, but there are a lot of other people who are happy about it. And well, rg3 tweeted something I thought was profound. He related this country to a football team, talking about this country, relating this. This country has always been greater than one person. It's you, myself, everybody, us. That's what makes America what it truly is. But the strength of this nation was never one person, and what RG3 alluded to in his tweet it was rather long. You know, obviously, us, the people, we the people A football team, more often than not, is full of diversity From the places, everyone's from race, religion, color, backgrounds with one common goal and that's to win, and he related that to us as americans. One common goal to win, win at life, with our freedoms, loving each other, but winning together as Americans. It's a great country, you know, and there's a saying that I've always used. I think it's because how I was raised Be humble in victory but gracious in defeat.
Speaker 1:We have somewhat seen that, but not really. But what I've seen that really triggered me was the attacking of women, particularly on social media, related to the reproductive rights and abortion. This is a subject that I never anticipated would come up on this podcast, but I saw enough hatred, ignorance and just senseless people who are pressing sin and offending women and attacking them about their bodies, meaning their rights, and it just amazes me because we all have had a mom, sisters, more often than not, a girlfriend, a wife, and I just don't understand the disrespect toward women. It's okay to have difference of opinions, it's okay, that's what makes it people mature and great. But just because someone disagrees with you, especially on that subject, does not give anyone the right to attack and really insult women. That's something that triggers me and I know I'm not alone.
Speaker 1:The reproductive rights I've learned so much over the last four to five years. And we're talking about ectopic pregnancies. And we're talking about ectopic pregnancies. You know when Roe versus Wade was reversed. There's a lot of people who aren't aware of this, you know how it?
Speaker 1:affects women it's not so much using birth control or using abortion as birth control, but we're talking about pregnancies that can essentially take the life of a woman. You can't do those in certain states because of the power. After Roe versus Wade was reversed, the power goes to the state to determine their laws on abortion and unfortunately some pregnancies have to be terminated to save the life of a woman. But to tell a woman what she can or can't do With their bodies. I know that's a political debate. Everyone has a different opinion on it. I will never insult you Because of your opinion, but the vitriol we're on display it's been gross. So, but the vitriol we're on display is it's been gross. So my request is the women in your life and women maybe you have, you encounter or are in your life in whatever capacity Show them the most utmost respect. Hey, we're going to talk about the longhorns. Utmost respect. Hey, we're going to talk about the longhorns. The longhorns about to start what may be November to remember. What is that all about? I'll let you know on the other side of this break.
Speaker 1:Honest is a strong word and we all need honesty when it comes to plumbing and HVAC needs. Somebody who will take care of the repairs efficiently and with quality. Honest Plumbing and Air is who I trust, and they take pride in that word. Honest Plumbing and Air, where a handshake still means something. The Saxton name resonates in Austin. Jim's late father, james Saxton, is a Longhorn legend, a Heisman finalist while playing for Darryl K Royal, and Jimmy is a UT football legacy from Westlake. He has been insuring Austin for decades. He and his staff will give you old school hospitality when servicing your insurance needs.
Speaker 2:Yeah, no, it was mutual between the two of us.
Speaker 1:That perhaps was the shortest soundbite in stories inside the man Cave podcast history Steve Sarkeesian talking about the highly recruited and talented wide receiver Jontae Cook from DeSoto, texas. A five-star, he's no longer a Longhorn. I believe his last reception of the year was against UT San Antonio. I've heard rumors of the reasons why, but I can't confirm them so I'm not going to talk about them. A number of reasons, but he is entering the transfer portal and, shockingly you hate it for a young person, but you hope that he finds a new start, which he will Fresh start somewhere new. Don't know all the details because I can't confirm it. I've heard so many rumors. All right, november 2, remember it's very cliche For many teams, november is when you truly congeal as a team and make a run, make that push, that final push toward becoming who you will be, your destiny, reaching your destiny. In this case, texas. November will determine if Texas plays for a championship, first SEC and then into the 12-team playoff to play, hopefully, for the Longhorns in national championship.
Speaker 1:Four really tough games. In my opinion. Florida is not so Florida right now, but they are uber talented. They're an average team right now. They're struggling a little bit, but they've improved in the last few weeks Texas hosts Florida goes on the road to Fayetteville, arkansas. That is a hornet's nest. Trust me as a fan. I hope to never. Well, I'm never going to say I never will. I just don't want to go back to Fayetteville as a fan for a while. That is a great college football environment.
Speaker 1:Then Texas comes back home for its last regular season home game against Bob Stoots' brother, mark, and the Kentucky Wildcats. Then it's on to the renewal of the Lone Star Showdown at Kyle Field and College Station, which is an insane environment. The Aggies and Longhorns and we have said this on this podcast many times that we thought that game will more than likely determine who will clinch a spot in the SEC championship game. They're on a crash course right now. But first things first.
Speaker 1:First off, the Longhorns playing Florida later this morning here in Austin. Here in Austin, it's not so much Texas having to deal with the opponent, it's about refining who Texas is. They just got off a second bye week. They come off a game which you know back-to-back games Georgia Vanderbilt in which they have racked up quite a few penalties, last outing 10 penalties for 108 yards, which those type of penalties have negated explosive plays. When I say explosive, we're talking 10 plus 10 to 15 yards per play, minimum Key penalties which have negated those types of plays, and Sark, steve Sarkeesian, talked about that by using the term moving forward.
Speaker 2:That's been the challenge this week, as aggressive as we want to call it. As much formations, motion shifts we want to do. We want to make sure that our players understand. Let's keep moving forward and let's minimize the late grabs that our potential holds. Let's minimize the sacks that that maybe we're taking waiting on a throw down the field instead of maybe finding a check down. Let's minimize the runners, you know, maybe trying to bounce something to look for a run. But let's, let's move forward, because when we do that we're really efficient.
Speaker 1:No doubt, and we haven't seen that efficient offense in several weeks now. If you remember the Georgia game, there were a lot of blitzes from linebackers and even D tackles shooting the gap and going unblocked and getting a free shot on Quinn Quinn Ewers and that rattles a quarterback. Now Quinn's been a little off, coming back from that oblique injury. It's about when he's talking about being efficient, everything blocked up, communication, um, audible, and where all the linemen are picking up. They're choosing this communicating. I've got x, y and z, I've got him.
Speaker 1:Him and the running backs are a key in the past blocking, because there were a couple moments, even at vanderbilt, in which the running backs missed a blitzing Commodore from Vanderbilt and Quinn ended up getting sacked. There's been too many pressures, too many sacks given up by the Longhorns in these last few games and they're going to have a tall task because someone's got to account for this guy. So there are several 300 plus 330 plus pound guys on that Florida front on the defensive line. This guy, desmond Watson, 449 yards, massive human being, and Sark knows him, knows about him all too well.
Speaker 2:They list him at 449, not even 4 440, and that might be generous. I don't know. I I'm fired. I I recruited him in high school and I remember vividly going to armwood high school with coach banks, uh and uh, seeing him in person, I was like wow, that is a really big person, um. But but the thing about him, he's got suddenness, he's got quickness and he's not like a guy that just stands there. You saw the photo.
Speaker 1:And he's wearing 21. He stretches that number as far as possible. Keep an eye on this. See what Texas does to him, because I've got a feeling there's going to probably be some double teams. I mean, this guy's pretty mobile for a 449 pound human being. That's a large human, large human. Another thing to keep an eye on their uber-talented quarterback youngster, dj Lagway. Game time decision has a hurt hamstring that he suffered against Georgia. Keep in mind when Lagway was healthy, before that injury, they were pushing Georgia. They were in that game. 100% Florida was. He's a game time decision. So what I'm guessing here is I'm thinking that he's a no-go. If he is, he's not going to be remotely close to 100%, but you don't want to put a guy out there who can't protect himself, so keep an eye on that.
Speaker 1:Now, one thing that we definitely need to keep out, and I love doing these. There's a few games every week that we list that are upset alert in college football For week 11, here we go Michigan at undefeated Indiana. Indiana has yet to receive the respect that they deserve Michigan's average. They're not a very good ball club, but they're not awful. I'm going to take Michigan to pull off the upset Now if Indiana blows them out, indiana deserves more respect. Miami, they're ranked above Texas and I think they're number four in the country at Georgia Tech In Atlanta.
Speaker 1:Man, keep an eye on the rambling wreck from Georgia Tech. Good possibility GT pulls off this upset. This one I'm taking. I'm taking Jackson Dart and Ole Miss in Oxford to pull off the upset at Georgia. Just think about what that will mean. Georgia will have two losses, which opens the door for a lot more teams to have an opportunity to get into that SEC title game. So now it's going to be confusing to see even project who would make the CFP, who doesn't make the SEC title game? And Colorado. Shout out to Deion Sanders primetime. He has led Colorado to bowl eligibility. Texas Tech gave Iowa State their first loss of the season last week in Ames. Look for an upset here. I think the Red.
Speaker 1:Raiders in Lubbock are going to pull off the upset of Neon Deion primetime in Colorado. Colorado's good, much better. But I think our guy Tosh Brooks and the Red Raiders have got something going. And I want to say Texas Tech upsets Colorado in Lubbock today. Just humble, humble. Don't take my words and go throw some money online to an offshore betting service. Or if you're in Vegas watching this, that's all I got to say. I don't want you losing money. But those are the upset alerts for week 11 in college football. Hey, thank you for enduring through my political rant. Let's just be kinder, show more love, especially to our ladies in our lives, and really listen and raise those mugs up. Have a great day and enjoy this beautiful day in college football. You.
