Offseason Priorities And Spring Chemistry

College football offseason has changed a lot. Um, since but there's still a lot of similarities there. You know, you can't just say it's changed drastically, but what's your feeling going into this offseason? How do you sum it up? What's important? What are you looking forward to the most? Not just Texas, but what are you looking forward to across the country that maybe you haven't looked forward to in most college football offseasons?

Um, I think it's gonna be a big emphasis on spring games this year. Um, I they may not play a real spring game, but the spring practices are going to be very, very important. When you got teams like um Oklahoma State that has a basically a whole nother roster, this is this is a very, very important time for them to jail together for two-a-days, or I guess we don't even call it two-a-days anymore, but um to get before camp before uh the season starts. So this is a very, very important um uh off season for teams uh around the country. So especially the University of Texas. So we got um you know two new running backs, uh a wide receiver, and a couple. Well, do we have a couple wide receivers? Uh new, yeah, and then um, and then the freshmen that are coming in. So everyone needs to really get in their playbook and then get some chemistry because our offense needs chemistry as well. So uh it's gonna be really important this offseason. I'm looking forward to it. I'm going to a few practices uh when they kick off um uh uh spring football. So uh I'm looking forward to it, man. It's gonna be uh I don't know how what format that Sartre's gonna use for the uh spring game, but I will likely be there as well.

Uh probably more of a fan appreciation type situation. Speaking of Sark, uh I ran into him at the um the pre-event to RBI's now at bat. Uh another million dollar night for RBI Austin. It's tremendous. Talk to Sark, man. That he is he is fun to talk to. Yeah, he is engaging, good storytelling, and he's just fun. I mean, he's just a good human being. Good human being. Um, it's good to talk to him. You know, he he asked me some things that we were talking about, family and things like that, and then I was telling him, man, I how you guys are able to coach and develop kids in this age where they're coming in all the time, and as you alluded to, because the portal, and there's so many influences now, much different than when you were uh a longhorn. It's just it's come these kids have got things just coming at them all over the place, and to keep them together to build a program, it takes a good staff to um make sure everything is good. Yep. Um, to catch everyone up to speed as we transition to the conversation of the transfer portal season coming to a close, so to speak. Um it has an Addams family theme to it. And to give everyone a uh like a tease and Stevie a tease, well, the Adams family is going to be experiencing this college football tradition. Hey, jump around, Wisconsin, the Badgers, Playmaker 83. Hey, tell us about your Adams Family Portal experience, and why did we just see Jump Around at in Madison, Wisconsin?

Well, but before I get into that, first of all, I don't like Jump Around. I used to like it. The reason I don't like it now, and I guess I'm gonna have to start liking it again. While I was at Maynard coaching, and and we it was 2013, man, and we went into our by district playoff game and we played Magnolia West. We were ranked like seventh or eighth in the state, expected to make a run in state, right? I remember. And man, Magnolia West, they jumped all over, man. A little old guy named Sean Bell, who became the head coach of CD Ridge and is now University of Houston quarterback coach and went to Baylor and all that kind of stuff. All we heard that whole game was jump around. Oh I went from liking that song back in the party days to just hate hating that song, absolutely. But I have to start liking it again because uh my my both of my boys are are now at the University of Wisconsin. So uh I guess I'm gonna have to start you know interchanneling my jump around house of pain guys.

Stevie, I was gonna ask him and then you can follow up. Um both of his boys uh obviously played here locally, uh Vandegriff and then signed with Louisville, uh Deuce, the quarterback. Um there's there's no animosity because you guys are this is the new era. If you or Stevie would have gone through this process back in your days, or any of us, you know, you usually leave, you're just not happy. But right, it's it's a different scenario. What how did this all play out?

Man, it's totally different. And that that's the thing about it. I think a lot of people are the more and more that that we continue to grow in this era. I mean, I think people would see it for what it is, which a lot of us who are in the sports world, you know, we've been saying all along, it this is basically monolith professional football. I I mean, everything from a being able to have an agent to being able to transfer as many times as you need to, which is basically free agency, and the fact that you know these guys are getting you know paid. I really can't even say the word paid money. I can't, it's hard for me to talk about because we played in the era to where, man, if you took a if you got a lunch from somebody, you were in trouble. It's a totally different era now. And I just think uh, you know, we we got to experience it ourselves. You know, the boys decided to hop in the portal right after the ball game. And uh you know, and then at that time, you know, as a parent, you you're kind of on the outside looking in, but but you definitely understand what where your your your sons are coming from, and you know, there was no it wasn't uh you know any animosity between you know the boys and Louisville. I mean, they actually wanted them to stay, which is you know, uh I guess another you know part of this whole mess, you know, because once you enter the portal, you know, the player submits his name to compliance, and then the university has 48 hours to make it official. Well, Louisville didn't exactly make it official right away, which was kind of mind-blowing to us. It's like, hey man, follow the rules, right? No, we no, they wanted to get in the portal. You know, had Louisville played things the way they were supposed to be, I mean, Texas might have had Isaac Brown because they didn't release him in the portal when they were supposed to. So that's that's one reason why Isaac Brown is not here. I know that for a fact. So Friday comes around 48 hours after they declare for the portal. They should have been official, they weren't. Um quarterback coach uh OC, um, Coach Brahm, Brian Braun, the brother Jeff Brahm, he he reaches out to Deuce, he's like, Hey man, I saw that you you know kind of entered the portal or you attempting to. Hey, what's going on? Like, you know, we want to keep you here, like what needs to happen, blah blah blah. And you know, he goes and talks to the higher up, talks to his brother, and next thing you know, I'm here I am, I'm on the phone as a parent talking to Coach Brahm. And you know, my first question was you know, I wasn't advocating or doing any of that, right? I'm just like, hey coach, uh hey, appreciate you, you know, having my boys there at your campus for the last two years. Um, you know, what do they need to work on to improve? I can't I'm always thinking like a coach, and I'm never gonna be the parent that's you know advocating for his kids the wrong way. You know, hey, and coach, he said, hey, hey, Mr. Adams Deuce has done a phenomenal job here. We want to keep him here. Uh matter of fact, he's the best quarterback we have on the roster right now. There's not gonna be anybody in the portal that's gonna be any more talented than he is. We'd love to keep him. And I said, Okay, well, coach, well, that that sounds good. I mean, because we we want to be a Louisville, you know. Let's just see if we can make this happen. He said, you know, our full transparency, we are looking for another quarterback in the portal. We you know, we just need more quarterbacks, which I totally get. And he said, and as soon as that happens, I'm gonna let you know, and we can just kind of go from there. So coach calls like the next day, and it's like, hey, Mr. Adams, we picked up a quarterback, you know, you we got the kid from Ohio State, Lincoln Keenholes. I'm kind of like, okay, that's cool. You know, we we we were fine, like because to us, it matters which quarterback were you gonna pick in the portal. Yeah, we weren't concerned with you getting a quarterback in the portal, but it does matter if you're gonna bring in another Miller Moss type, a guy who started and been established for two years. Now you're already telling us we we don't have a snowball chance in hell to compete for the job. Yeah, but they bring in a guy who hadn't started, you know. He was uh, you know, been there in Ohio State for three years. And and I think him being in Ohio State, which we were pleased with, we were like, okay, yeah, reduce. I mean, you kind of got an advantage here. You've been on campus for two years, you know the playbook, they like you. Man, you're you're QB1 until otherwise. Yeah, well, when they're paying a guy two million dollars, you know, in Lincoln Keyholds, but they're not paying you anywhere close to that, that's a problem. Money is dictating who's starting for people, not talent, not you know who's the best guy. And and it's crazy saying that because there was a time when you and I played Stevie. I mean, we knew for a fact you had to be the best guy. I mean, there was nothing, no other incentive, you know, you know, line between the weeds that that that gave coaches to say, oh, well, this guy's better than that guy because we're paying him for money. I mean, it wasn't that at all. We you had to earn your spot. It's not like that this day and age, man. It's NFL for sure. If they're paying a guy $15 million, if they're paying a guy two million dollars, that's the guy that's gonna be the guy, regardless if he's played or not. So and and which is fine too. If you're gonna pay a guy two million dollars, man, but you need to make sure you're taking care of the other guy somewhere, at least comparable, that would say that it's a it's a competition. Yeah, wasn't the case. So I was like, man, okay, well, it's time to go. So long story short, man, Louisville, the their whole quarterback room left. Oh my god, I didn't realize that. Yeah, no, it wasn't just it wasn't just us. I mean, because I think everybody just kind of saw the situation. It was like, man, you know, it's it's probably not a good situation for for them particularly. So when we we got in the portal, man, and we and you know, negotiations occurred back and forth over the weekend. I mean, there was there were a lot of negotiations, which you know, it was like, okay, they they they they do want you, but they want you at their price tag, their their labeling, and it just wasn't what wasn't a good situation. So we say, hey coach, make it official, please enter them to the portal. And man, to be honest, it got kind of ugly, to be honest, because you know, they didn't want to enter them into the portal officially. I mean, I mean, it took their agent to you know, kind of you know, thre threaten legal, you know, hey, hey, enter their name to the portal or yeah, yeah.

So that's what I was gonna ask, MA. Um, is there legal ramifications for delaying their portal request?

Because obviously you can be that could cost you oh for your money university, it could cost you big time, and if they delay the process, you know, it could really hurt a kid's prospects of where they may end up going, especially if you look at a situation where it's a last-minute situation and they they they don't enter you in when they should, and you're bumping up against that that that portal dateline, um, you know, you could be in trouble. But man, you know, God is good, obviously. Uh, you know, they officially got entered into the portal like that Monday. I want to say it was like the uh maybe the fifth or so. Matter of fact, it was the fifth. And uh, you know, we had to move them out of their apartment because once you enter the portal and it becomes official, that university pretty much just cuts you off. Like you're done. Like, like, like you, you got a certain time to move out. There's no more aid, there's no more any of that, right? No more payments, none of that kind of stuff. So the boys had to be out of their apartment Thursday, man. So we drove up Tuesday, packed them up, man. The whole time we're driving up there, the phone is blowing up, right? The phone is blowing up. I'm like, man, okay, here we are, Christmas in January, recruiting all over again. I mean, we you know, Deuce was getting offers that he didn't even get in high school, you know, which was surprising to me, man. And most of them came from the big 10. Yo, James Madison. I mean, I mean, they came out, they were like, hey, we're looking for QB1. You know, here's what QB1, here's the situation with that. And we we we were kind of, you know, I was like, man, I was taking aback to be honest. Uh had the way the phone was blowing up as we were driving to uh Louisville to pack them up. And uh, yo, Wisconsin call, Michigan call, Ohio State call, Indiana call. No, no, we had some, we had a nice little list, right? And uh, you know, Wisconsin was the first visit, and you know, they were pretty good, man. Wisconsin was, you know, you know, coach Kenny Guy and quarterback coach, and you know, OC and head coach, man. I mean, they they made the boys feel at home. They would say, hey, we're we're not going to uh let these guys leave here and go to Ann Arbor for a visit. No, they left Louisville Wednesday while my wife and I we were there still packing up, packing them up. They left and went to Wisconsin by themselves, and they were slated to go to Michigan the next day at 5:30. And they were on the plane, man, all strapped in, and some last-minute negotiations happened. And sure enough, they were pulled off the plane, stayed in Wisconsin another night, and uh the deal was done at Wisconsin. So we didn't pulled us off the plane, like the deal was done. I mean, it it was you know, like I said, Miss Con Wisconsin made a great push to to keep the boys in that's awesome. So oh yeah, man. I I I'm not gonna lie, I I kind of wanted them to take a visit to Michigan. I mean, would have been just good to go there, you know, new coaching staff, and right you you know, they they they made us aware of the situation there in Michigan and Ohile Stadium. I mean, it was you know, I mean, it was flattering for the offers to come like they were, even Indiana, man. And Indiana was caught in between playing, and you know, so that visit would have been pushed to the following week. And uh, you know, so it was like, man, you know, you do have some takers, you do have value. You know, so that's a good thing about the portal. I mean, players get to really see you know what their true market value is, correct? You know, and a lot of times it's better at the new place than it is at the old place, you know, it ends up being that way. Way and nah man, but we're we're thanks for the B badgers. Just to add another twist every you know what? I can't add that twist. I'm about to tell y'all that off the record. I'm about to tell you that off the record. I hear you, man.

That's but and here's the thing between the Adams story, Adams Family Portal story, this is this great gives great perspective, not only to Stevie and myself, but to you watching, listening. But what I learned also from the portal that you and I three of us have talked about, like take Steve and F, for example. They did sign four, I think maybe five guys from Division II. Yeah, that they scouted. So it to all the high school kids, they are slighted because the portal, a lot of high school kids, but because you sign with a division two, man, you you can still fulfill your division one dreams the very next year, yeah.

Man, I I would be on record as saying the the landscape for recruiting has changed so much for high school kids. Like, honestly, if I had to go back and do it again, and if I had another son coming up right now, I don't know if I would steer him towards uh you know FBS power four. We may go the G5 route right out the gate. G five or FCS. Why not? You got a chance to get on the field earlier because you know those you know the bigger programs, man. You know, you're probably gonna sit for sure your first year. No, and possibly second year. Okay, I mean, I mean, you got a chance at the G5, FCS level to get on the field right now because the word experience has changed. Back in the day when we played, experience was okay, the guy's been in the program three years, he's ready to go now. The experience now is have you been on the field? Have you played? Doesn't matter if it's division two, division three, FCS, G5, because those are the guys that have the experience. Those are the guys that are you know going from D2 to FBS, power four. I mean, man, the kid we used to play baseball with, uh, Tony Diaz at UTRGV. Yeah, I man went there, blew up. Oh man, he got like 20 offers, power five offers, one year playing at UTRGV, FCS, first year program. So, no man, parents got to really look at this a totally different way than how our parents may have looked at it 20 25 years ago.

It's so it's very similar. Stevie and I had a great opportunity last week. We got uh Marcus Boswell, former Lake Travis uh linebacker. He was on uh the episode last week. Uh, you guys can view it on our YouTube or Facebook page. Uh Marcus Boswell, one of the most impressive young people I've ever met. Um, he went to prep school. I had never met anyone that played at a prep school. Uh-huh. Then he went to Akron. Right. And now he's at Texas.

Exactly, man. Like, like you can take the backdoor route, is a viable route this day and age in college football. Like, like, and I don't even know if I would even call it backdoor. Like, you really have to be strategic this day and age. Because, man, I mean, I mean, you're you're seeing guys, you know, you you get to the power five level, and you know, it may be two, three, four years before you play. Then it's like, man, I gotta get on the field. No, you you have to get on the field. And and like I said, there's nothing wrong, man. So if I'm at a school like a Texas state now, a North Texas, a UTSA, oh man, these guys recruiting class coming out of high school, they they need to do it. They can they got a chance to do something really great and get these top flight recruits to come to their school. Now it's gonna take a hell of a recruiting job. It's gonna take a budget like you know, well, what Tex State has that budget now because they're in the Pac-12, which I guess is they're gonna be a power conference now. But um, it might be a little hard for a UTSA, you know, different schools like that. But man, they got to do a great job of recruiting to get some of these top flight kids to come play at their schools instead of going to say a Georgia Tech or Miami or Louisville and send events two or three years.

Stevie, what you're you're one of your neighbors has a lot of knowledge. Uh Texas, they are finishing, just reeling it back home. They finished very strong, a lot of momentum. They they added another O lineman, so that's I think two, maybe three O linemen, I can't remember, uh and and another defensive lineman. So they have a and linebacker, they they've done really well. These are all needs. I'm not saying that they got everything, but what have you heard, Stevie, on this Longhorn portal class as they're because they're still active, they're still going after.

Yeah, still going at, but for me, um, I think we're gonna um I think that we should go ahead and coach up what we have. I think we did we did well. Um, I was asked to give us a grade on the portal um uh acquisitions, and I and I want to call it a B B minus, only because in the beginning we didn't get everybody that we wanted, right? But in the end, we got everything that we needed, you know what I mean? So um, so we got the offensive lineman, we got the two running backs, we got Coleman at receiver. Um, so we got the weapons on offense, we got uh big huge 380-pound DT, right? We got um linebackers, I think two running back, yeah. Um, but I think we wanted a couple more DBs, but we got everything we need, so it's all it's up to these coaches now to go ahead and coach them up. And I I would have given it a higher grade if we didn't miss out early in the portal on some guys that we really wanted.

Yeah, oh yeah, yeah, definitely a viable option this day and age, man. So if you're if you're a player and you know, you you know, maybe you didn't get the school you wanted coming out of high school, or or maybe you went somewhere for a year or two and it's not working out, man. That's no excuse for you to not keep grinding. I mean, because options are definitely on the table this day and age. I mean, you could be somewhere for six months, and next thing you know, you're at another school

Texas Portal Grade And Roster Needs

the the following six months, yeah, and that could be your you're in school. I mean, I mean, look at Cam Ward. Started out of UIW, went to Washington State, then goes to Miami. So you know, that that's the route here in college football these days, man. Right, like that is definitely the route to go, especially if you're in a certain position. I mean, you see the opportunities that quarterbacks here. Yeah, I mean, I mean, I mean, they they get the opportunities that really not a lot of the other players get because a lot of teams don't have you know great quarterbacks. I mean, so you got a chance to keep a guy, like say maybe a Queen Hoovers, you know, come play for us for eight million dollars instead of you know going to the league right now or whatever the situation may be. And obviously, Quinn chose to go into the draft, just like uh the Alabama quarterbacks choosing to go to the to the draft. Uh, I mean, because he's been offered upwards to six million dollars to stay and find him another team, but you know, kind of like Quinn, he didn't want you know, he wanted his last and legacy to be you know the University of Alabama, just like Quinn with Texas. So I definitely get that part of it. But the fact that that's even an option for certain positions, I mean, I mean, it's a great option. You don't have to rush to the NFL like you guys wanted to, right?

So as we we wrap it up, this is uh, you know, everyone has their own rankings, but as far as rankings, you know, everyone's gonna rank something, but as far as portal class rankings, uh, the overall consensus, LSU number one, old miss number two, Texas three. So that's notable, but here's what this is what shocks me. You remember what happened last year to Oklahoma State? Gundy gets fired, I believe, in what what first of October, last of September.

And if these guys didn't think it was this day and age, they there's no way they would be going to get guys from Jackson State or some of these smaller schools or even North Texas. I mean, guys can play, they can play. I mean, it's the reason NFL draft guys all over. Man, you see scouts everywhere at all the games. That's why their scouting departments are so large because football players are everywhere. So, yeah, nah, it's gonna be it's gonna be interesting to see next year how you know these teams you know do with all the new players.

Yeah, and you, you know, Deuce being a four-star at the time, and and you know, you know, comes out there and starts the game because really the competition was gonna run through the first three games of the season, and whichever guy performed better at that point was gonna be the starting quarterback.

So they were placed in a district with back-to-back defending state champion Smith Valley. Yeah, that's and there's a little bit of traveling, but the reason I'm showing you this one just focus on district 13, 5A, division two. What do you notice about that? What stands out?

Yeah, uh, but my signing day was I didn't have a real signing day. The signing day, I was already on campus. Uh I was uh early to be a mid-year, exactly. So I came in in January. But uh a little bit of a funny story, I'll make it quick is uh Phillip and I uh played our last high school football game in the championship in the Superdome in New in New Orleans uh December 13th. Uh we we committed to uh Texas short uh real right before that game and um played a game December 13th. We have Christmas and New Year's, and we are ready to to come on campus at the University of Texas January 9th. Well, the clearing house, which which clears all the football players back then, was closed over Christmas, so we didn't get cleared through the clearing house to be on campus um until uh well I'll tell you this we're on our way to Austin. Mac Brown, Cleve Bryant, Gene Bryant gets in the office and say, You cannot be on campus. You guys gotta find a hotel. We're at the hotel across the street from the University of Texas at the day's end, waiting for them to find somebody to go and give us clearance from the clearing house to get on campus. So two nights in a hotel with all of our stuff packed in our cars to um to get on to campus to move into our dorm because the rest of the school wasn't even here yet. They wanted us to come in to get all settled and everything. So um they finally got somebody to clearing house. They get they get the clearance that we can come on campus. Cleave Gene and uh Mac Brown get us all settled in. They get somebody to uh to open dorms up for us and get us all settled in, and that's my story of leaving Shreveport, my mama's house and my dad's house to come to the University of Texas, and I never look back. I've been there since 26 years, man. January 9th, uh 2000, when I moved here. So that's fast-paced living.

And uh man, and man, if it if it weren't for Buggy Gobboat, actually, because he recruited me, you know, from UT and you know, Coach McIvig and Coach Bryant, you know, they came to my school and all that kind of stuff. I I don't know if I would have been a long horn. If it weren't for McAvee getting a job, I I wouldn't have been a long horn because I just remember seeing him coaching that Illinois and that offense when they beat Colorado that year, and he was slinging the ball all over the place. And I was like, Man, you know, and I I received some contact from Illinois and things like that. And when he got the job here, man, that kind of that's what brought Texas in the fold for me.
