Coach Vic Schaefer's Longhorns, they put a whippin' on Michigan, and they're back in the final four. Think about this. The UT Women's Basketball Program has been to the Final Four, well, now five times, two of which on Vic Schaefer's Watch. I am Sean Clinch, the host of Stories Inside the Man Cape Podcast. Stevie Lee and uh the playmaker Mike Adams. They are both coming up shortly. But yeah, the Texas women are headed back to the Promised Land. They're headed out west to the desert in Phoenix, AZ. Um a complete break. So it was it was definitely tough. You know, after conversations with the the doctor, I couldn't break it anymore. So there wasn't, you know, much of a high risk in terms of the actual injury. Obviously, you could hurt other things, but I had nothing to lose. It was a sweet 16.

Stevie Lee, I know we go from one high, I open talking about the Texas women teasing up Mark's madness and the great job that uh Vic Schaefer and that talented group of ladies have done. But when you really think about what Sean Miller and that group accomplished, they had the stuff almost slid right out of an at-large position there at the end of the season, but barely got in, made the most of it, played three NCAA tournament games in a week, and probably should have beaten Purdue. But having heard what Jordan Pope dealt with during that Gonzaga win and played with a broken foot, I mean, I don't know if there's many men or women who could sustain that and that pain, but you don't hear about that much these days. That's a guy who's doing that for his team.

Yeah, it was an amazing run for um men's uh Texas men's basketball. Uh going into a play-in just to get into the terminal and making it all the way to the sweet 16. Um, that actually is um a testament of their heart, of how they wanted to play together, how to be together. Um hats off to Sean. In terms of uh the university being in the capital city, and other other than the weather, that's what that's a stark difference in the two cities. But um, nah, man, though, they born and raised here. Say they want to hit the lakes, they want to hit all the restaurants, they want to go to Franklin's and get on Lake Austin, man. Like Travis, nah, it's just smorgasburg of things on the menu. So, you know, Austin's hard to get away from, and I always knew that I would come back here and live once you know I've kind of settled in, and yeah, they're they're glad to be on for sure.

Man, and I don't think that's just hyperbole either. I think they have a legitimate shot. If anybody's gonna be UConn, I think it's Nick Schaefer's lady horns. Um, just wrong, man. All around effort. Uh great defense, very good offense. They can hurt you multiple ways, man. They rebound, they're tough. Ever since the uh the meltdown, quote unquote, that coach had by the team being soft. Man, they come out, man, they put together a string of victories. I don't even know if they've lost since then.

You know, they they responded in that moment because they they know the type of team they are, and coach is definitely trying to get them to reach their potential. But man, they just you know, and they and they got a killer in uh Madison Booker. I mean, they they got someone they can go to, they got a little spark plug and a point guard. To me, they're just all around balance scene, and and they're they're battle tested. I I I think they can win it all for those reasons, and you know, Coach Schaefer, he's been there, done that. Um, they got a great leader, great bench to support. Um, and I think they're riding away with momentum right now. And you know, I think it's funny how and and I don't, you know, Michigan, I don't blame them at all for you know for the stare down and the confidence. They're they're supposed to do that, but we also show that that's how you respond to people, you know, when they do those kinds of things, and um, you know, you gotta respond to the stare down, you gotta look them in the eye, and that's exactly what they did, man. And they put an exclamation point on their run to the final four last night.

Stevie, I I I thought they would make it, and for some people, it's not a success unless they go around deeper, which would be the national championship game. Did that surprise you how they just flipped the switch and just totally annihilated Michigan?

Um, I knew that they're they were gonna beat Michigan. Well, I I had a feeling that they'll beat Michigan, but not the way they did. Um, it was uh it was fun to watch. Those girls go out there and have fun. Uh, and then during the game, someone said something about the stare down. And um, and then so I went to go, I went and found the stare down. I was like, oh, okay, these girls are gonna put the the the they they're gonna put the gas on. So um that was fun. That was a lot of fun to watch. Um I I had them in the final four. I thought that this is where they needed to be. Um, I think there's golly, how do I put this? There's the blue bloods of women's basketball are right here, and we all kind of figured that this is what it was gonna be. I mean, it's all the number one seeds that are in the final four. So this is playing out like it was supposed to play out. Agreed. Yeah.

it it's I mean, it's been building for the last three or four years. And you know, UConn's the defending national champion, South Carolina, Don Staley. They've been around, they've been on this scene for forever, they've been at this table. Texas, surprisingly, this is only their fifth trip to the Final Four in the program's history, but back-to-back appearances. But I think you guys know, and I'm not just being I'm not a cliche guy. I mean, cliches do come out of my mouth from time to time, but championship winning programs, they have these stories, these characters, and these these special things, these special elements, and one of which is a former walk-on from DFW. And I've been to two or three of these women's games, and you have these signs toward the end of a game that says put Sarah in. And if you haven't seen it, this is what it's all about. Sarah Graves, she's gonna be in the man cave at some point, hopefully bringing her mini national championship trophy. Check this out.

For you, what is it like sitting on the bench and then hearing the crowd? You, what is it like sitting on the bench and then hearing the crowd? I love it so much because you can see how much they love the game and how much how invested they are in our team. I mean, if you know the names characters, you're very invested in women's basketball because I'm not on the court a lot. So to see their love for us and to see them waiting in line outside, and to see them so invested into every single person on our team, like it makes me emotional at times. I started showing up on the bench a little bit, not because they're chinning for me, but because of how much they love our team and how much they've put into us.

So, yeah, the fans are yelling. That's a good sign. If they're yelling at Vic early, put in Sarah early. MA, what other elements do you notice about this team that just is just part of a championship caliber team?

Well, I I think you know, they've definitely risen to the occasion as far as meeting most of their expectations. I mean, obviously they want to win the the national championship, but I think to have that that championship DNA, man, they're they're loose. Man, you you don't see them really I don't I don't know if I've seen a game this year in which I just felt like they looked pressured and they were putting this extra amount of pressure on themselves. I I mean I think they came into the season with an expectation of getting back to the Final Four, hopefully winning the national championship. Um they kind of play at their own speed, they force you to you know, kind of you know, make uncharacteristic mistakes. And I I just I just think they're team, man. You know, whether they win it or not, that remains to be seen. But I but I do think they're destined to be where they are, and they certainly have a great opportunity to win it. They're confident and they're close, they're close in their group, yeah, yeah, yeah. Um and and there's no selfishness. I mean, I mean, you gotta have those things, those elements to to really bring home a championship. And I think they have it. I I think they're about as close to a championship level team as the number one overall C UConn Husky. And you know, just and I'll just wrap this up. The way they beat South Carolina a couple of weeks ago in the SEC championship game, because I I kind of came to the game, I felt like we would win, but I felt like it would be a close game. I actually thought South Carolina was gonna come back and make a run, and the game was gonna be kind of close going down the stretch, but I felt like we would win it. Man, we blew them out. Like we we I I think we beat them pretty easy, actually. And if somehow, you know, if that's the matchup in the in the final game, I mean, it wouldn't shock me if we did the same thing. So I I I do think they're they're ready, man.

Stevie, I I have to ask you this because you're in, I mean, I think we're all in the same boat, man. We we love watching this this group of ladies, and and honestly, we love watching the fact that women's basketball is gaining notoriety. I remember watching in the 80s as a kid growing up in Austin, and I saw that undefeated Jody Conrad team, the first undefeated national champion. Stevie, what is the one thing that you love about this team that you've not maybe not have seen before with other teams?

I think that they uh they play together. Um, and uh I think that their starting, their second five is just as good as their starting five. That's a good point. Yeah, because uh when they sub in, there's no down. There's no nobody coming down. There's the the team intensity is still up, so uh they play for each other, and then um Vic Vic is lucky he has um ten girls that can be starters, including Sarah Graves.

And it's uh, well, I'll give you one last story that I love. I just thought he was kidding. Last night in Fort Worth, somebody asked him, How are you gonna celebrate this? He says, We're gonna we're gonna drive back. I think something about hit up Bucky's, where Mike and I met after the Texas beat OU in Dallas. And he says, I'm gonna watch some film on the bus. I'm gonna go home and get some rest. And because right now's the beginning, first day of the spring turkey season in this part of the country, he says, I'm gonna go kill a turkey, and and then I'm going to the office, and then we're leaving for Phoenix for the final four. Guys, he was not he was not wrong, he was not exaggerating. This is what happened this morning. He killed a turkey. There you go. And that's CDC. Someone screen grabbed, took a screenshot of this uh FaceTime call. Uh, yeah, that's Vic Schaefer, a man of his word. Bagged a turkey on the first day of the spring turkey season. They advanced to the final four.

Love to see it, love to see it. And you know what? The players, man, they're feeding off his energy. I mean, I think I saw already that there was one team already in Phoenix. I think they went down like Monday night or whatever. And you know, teams take on the identity of their coaches, man. And coach here he is, just one. You know, hey, I'm going to go kill a turkey. Everybody thought, you know, it was a big joke. Man, he actually went out and killed a turkey, and just put everything on the back burner. And I I think that's just the attitude and spirit that these girls play with. And uh yeah, man, they're they're they're ready. They're they're they're definitely ready. I think they're gonna, you know, surprise the nation. I mean, I can't believe there were actually some people that thought Michigan would would actually upset them. Yeah, I don't I don't know where they saw that coming from, but Michigan is is is is a part of a bunch of memes today across the uh social media networks.

Men’s Final Four Picks And NIL Talk

in the Friday early evening game. That leads us to the men's final four. Um Stevie, I can't remember. Did you pick Illinois to be in the Final Four? Oh no. Uh I had to pick it up. MA and I both had Illinois. It's and there's a Good story there. Um Brad Underwood, he's from um McPherson, Kansas, and I think or played in a community college there, then played for Kansas State. Well, his first head coaching gig was at Stephen F. Austin in the mid 2010s. We were we ha had nothing to do with it. We were winning. We only had one NCAA tournament appearance. Brad Underwood took it like this. We're winning 30 games a year. Not only did we go to the tournament, but we win a game and lost to Notre Dame at the buzzer. Yeah. And so he parlayed that into Oklahoma State. Uh, the AD, the former golf coach of the time, Coach Holder, fumbled that, did not pay him. So he goes to Illinois, and he's done a great job. So somebody asked Underwood about that, that this was his dream job at Illinois, and it took 39 years for him to finally go to the Final Four. Little emotional response here.

I've been doing this 39 years, and uh you know, you dream about this as a kid, and I dreamt about doing it at Illinois back in the day when when my wife bought bought Tyler, who was maybe two, a Brian Cook jersey, and and you knew what a special place this was, and and it always has been, and there's been there's been no other thing for me. This is this is this is my dream job, and and it's it's very fulfilling to get where we're going.

Well, I had U of H. That's why Illinois wasn't in there. Well, I had U of H, but um I don't know, man. I I I it's it's a toss-up to me now at this point. I think UConn is um riding high, so I'm gonna say UConn. MA.

Yeah, I I actually chose Illinois to get to the Final Four to get to the championship game, as a matter of fact. I had them losing to Wisconsin. I mean, that was probably more of a homework pick, which I I know Wisconsin had a good team, man. They they beat uh Illinois during the regular season in Michigan and Purdue and a bunch of teams, you know, but obviously came over short against a high point. Man, but Arizona looks very, very tough right now. Like, I don't I I don't know what to make of them. I mean, I've seen them a couple times here as of late, and they just look dominant. They look very dominant, and I've seen Michigan play a few times this year. They're starting to look, I don't there, there were times this year that they didn't really look as dominant, dominant as they look now. Right. So either one of those two teams, I would think now, just having my my real head on my shoulders, they probably would have to be the favorite, man. But it's hard to bet against UConn, man. It's hard to bet against UConn and uh Dan Hurley, man. I mean, he willed them to victory on Sunday. He did honestly, I wouldn't be shocked if Illinois won. Man, they they remind me of an Olympic basketball team, you know, from Romania, or or I mean, just a team full of older Europeans that have been playing together since they were like 13 or 14. I mean, Paige's Toyota's son is on there, man. He's playing like an NBA caliber player. They they have height, they have length. I man, I don't be surprised if Illinois is in that championship game. That's all I'm saying.

That it won't shock me at all. But it has been a fun tournament. I think a lot of non-sports fans take interest in this, and I think that it is, I think it's the ratings. I need to look at them, but I just feel like there's more conversations in person and on social media more so than in in previous years. Um, so we're gonna. You know what though?

You know what, Sean? And and the thing about it, what's the one thing that that has not come up, well at least in my opinion, during these last three weeks? The one thing that's generally any other time of the year is the talk of uh the talk round the clock. But the one thing I really haven't heard a lot about is just nil. I mean, yeah, we've had guys transfer and all that kind of stuff, but but the nil talk has been put on the back burner for the last year.

Exactly, man. And so the tournament is not gonna change. You know, my first NCAA tournament was 1982. I saw Michael Jordan hit the shot. I was eight years old, and man, I was a fan of North Carolina, Michael Jordan. Ever since then, I do not miss the tournament. I'm not gonna miss the tournament with all this Neil talk. Just like I'm not gonna miss a college football game, I don't care how many times dudes transfer, how much money they're getting paid, I'm gonna watch college football day in and day out. Same thing with college basketball, because I think the true fans they understand that you know, while the game and the landscape is changing, man, the quality in which these guys are going out, they're still having to be student athletes, and they're still I mean, look at these guys from Duke, man. They they were crying, they were upset. All these teams that lose, bro, their hearts in it. So I don't want to hear from the casual fan that doesn't watch it. Oh, these guys just care about the money. I'm just gonna be blunt. Shut up. When high point shut up and turn the channel, go go watch something else and complain.

Texas Baseball Start And Bullpen Questions

So Stevie is going to go see Texas midweek baseball. Um, play Texas State's usually a heated, heated few games they play on Tuesdays, one in San Marcus, one in Austin. So Texas just come off, came off a sweet. They swept eighth ranked Oklahoma Friday night, Texas. I couldn't believe it, 14-0. And then over the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, or excuse me, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, because it was Palm Sunday weekend, uh, Texas had two walk-off wins on Friday and Saturday. Stevie, begin with you. This team right now, they're still building that bullpen. They're 23-4, and they're on top of the SEC right now. What is it that you're looking forward to seeing? Or just give me your impression of this team right now because they're fun to watch.

They are fun to watch, but they're like again, like I said, they were fun to watch last year, and then there was a little bit of a meltdown. So I don't want to get I'm getting more and more confident with them. I want to see the bullpen, uh, and I want to see them swing the bat, man. Um, uh, I mean, I know that's the name of the game, but um there's I guess I got a little bit of PTSD from last year. We all do, yeah. So I want to I want to see them finish it out. I don't want this that that that identity to be on University of Texas baseball. I want them to start well uh and ride it all the way out to the end and then peak during the uh World Series. College College World Series, right?

MA, it's um you you think about the lineup. They they i mean they're mashing that ball, they're playing situational ball, they're hitting for power, they're hitting it over the uh the the the big wall and left field, excuse me, center field, the big wall, and they're also being able to hit it with men in scoring position, right? But these Tuesday games is kind of they're at Keeley's Hill. What does that tell you about a team? I mean, for those who are a little concerned about it, what do you tell them?

You know, man, and it it's kind of midweek. I mean, it's obviously different than what your normal schedule is, and you know, sometimes that can catch you off guard. I'm not gonna sit here and say that coach doesn't have them focused and you know, things like that. I mean, that's the easy thing to come out and say, being that you know, it's midweek and they need to be ready to play, but um the routine, the routine can be thrown off, and you know, sometimes I'm not gonna say guys are underestimating teams either. I mean, I I think those are just times in which, you know, because we've seen it in the past before, you know, a Texas state or somebody has you know snuck up on them during the midweek. I I think uh the important thing for me right now, and it's a long season. I think some of the things you mentioned, man, they they they really need to stay locked in on, you know, knocking runners in when they're in scoring position. I mean, honing up the pitching staff in terms of you know, making sure you're at least three solid, you know, in terms of starters and maybe even developing a couple more. Because we know that depth come college world series playoff time and super regionals and things like that, man, that's gonna matter. That that is definitely gonna matter, and really just staying healthy and just keeping everybody intact, man, because it's a lot of baseball left to play.

Yep. And and and the key to that is especially in the regional play and in Omaha, yeah. You you you've got to have that pitching that super regionals. If your starters can get seven innings each, that's the key right now. They need the starters to go almost a complete game, but yeah, it's still early. It's still early. Hey, I I want to show you this. Did y'all see Reese Atwood, the catcher, what she did to AM? Watch the no-look throughout. Did y'all see this? This was ridiculous. So she acted like she was gonna throw to second. Yeah, her left eye had an eye on third, and that base runner for AM was not on the back. She saw it and just and looked, it's like that the the the no-look pass in basketball. She went like this. Nailed her. She pulled up.

Yeah, she pulled up Pat Mahomes. No look pass. There she goes. Looking at the the the corner and threw it across the middle of the field, you know, on a on the deep over route. But that that's just elite level catcher's play, right there, man. That that that's something that, you know, she's been playing that position for a long time. And for her to kind of, you know, and that's just you know, routine and and and setting up. You know, baseball's a game of I call it setups. Yeah. You know, why while you may not do it in the first inning or the third inning, I mean, at some point later in the game, it's good, you know, baseball, softball, it you're gonna remember that, and you're gonna be able to come back to it because you know, more times than not, the other team's not really paying attention. So that's that's great on her behalf.

Uh, so I went out to practice on on uh on Saturday, MA, and um uh uh it was a lot of fun. Got to uh talk to a lot of people, shake some recruits' hands and hang out with them. What I did like is we got some big old receivers, man. Yeah, we got some big old receivers, man. Uh Wingo and Cam Coleman out there, and then a couple other guys too, but uh receivers looked really good. Um what I felt like, and I said this once before over on a Bob Burton show on Texas football, was when I walked out there and I looked at the offense, it felt like going into a rich guy's house and and seeing all his toys. He's he's showing you off all his toys. That's what it felt like because we got some weapons and some toys. We got three good running backs, two already you know, been proven and transferred in. Uh, one kid from high school, I think, is gonna be the truth. Um, that's Cooper from high school, Derek Cooper. Yeah, yeah. He's uh he's every bit of 6'162, 210 pounds, and can put a foot in the ground and turn it up. Um we got that. We got uh

Yeah, that guy. Um, and and so uh it felt like there were weapons and uh uh it's gonna be fun to watch this offseason or this season, I'm sorry. And then um, and I'm gonna be 100% honest with you. I hope so. Um on the defensive side of the ball, our edge rusher uh Simmons looks fantastic. He's the leader of the defense, but um the interior coach was coaching very, very hard. I just say that. And he needed to. He needed to be coaching very, very hard. So um hopefully those guys start to come along. They they are big and they look fantastic like football players. Uh, but when the ball snapped, there's some coaching that needed to happen there, and he was coaching them hard. So uh so I was happy to see that that you know, you know, mistakes being made, but not just letting it go, you know. And so um, you know, the offense I feel like gonna be good. And and the other thing about that is if I have to coach my interior defensive lineman very hard, that means uh my offensive line is doing something right. Okay, so that's what I'm saying. The offense looks really, really good. Um, let's bring along that that defensive front as well.

I haven't had a chance to go down there, man, but I've seen some reports, and um I think I think Cam Coleman, man, I I think we're gonna see the best version of Ryan Wingo this year because of a guy like Cam Coleman being on campus. I mean, he he's obviously played on on a couple of Arburn teams that weren't very good, and he was pretty much carrying the team, him and a couple other guys, you know, offensively. I mean, he's the type of guy I I mean wouldn't shock me if he's a top five pick. Great size, like Stevie said. But I think he brings a certain attitude and swagger to the bunch that I don't think we've had. And to me, playing receiver, and I think playing receiver at the University of Texas, you know, you gotta have that swagger, dude. You you have to have that swagger. You know, to to me, I I mean, you're expected to help carry your team. I mean, you're expected to be a playmaker. So I, you know, I fully expect for Cam to be that dude. You know, you got a quarterback in arts who's going into his second full year starting. I think he's gonna do great. I mean, I I'm not shocked at all what we saw last year in terms of him struggling early on, but improving each and every week. I mean, man, he's he's a first-time starter. Doesn't matter if your last name is Manny, doesn't matter if your last name is is Dan Foust. You're gonna struggle your first year starting, you know. Eventually the game will slow down and it'll come to you. We should see a lot of improvement from Arch right off the bat, especially with the weapons that he has. So, you know, they're gonna be good, man. I I think this is probably the year that, you know, I know last year there was some extent, but this is probably the year which we could really find ourselves in that that Final Four of college football.

And I I think these also I think what a lot of people may not be talking about, and people can tell me to shut up too, because I'm maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, but I feel like though that those caliber of the receiver room will help the Texas DBs elevate their game. Um honestly, I and I think Kyle Simmons, man. I know he would man that that dude, if if I had a a pick in next year's NFL draft, to me, he's a top five pick. He he's a top five NFL pick, bona fide. Like, I'm I'm not letting him. If I need an edge rusher, he's the first guy I'll take. He he he's gonna be dominant this upcoming year. Dominant. Like, I I I really when Sagan if he won in the Gersky and and all these other types of defensive war, like, like I think he's that good.

And and um this was just a the sixth practice at the University of Texas uh spring practice, and it was it was good energy out there, but Simmons was playing or practicing like a champion, right? He was practicing like a champion, and so um that that's leadership, and he was he was definitely the leader, the leader on the uh defensive line or in the whole defense, in fact.

I think I I think I saw a comment from Shark that said uh you know he could disrupt practice all the time if they didn't take measures to to to kind of contain him, man. And you you can only imagine what it's gonna be like on Saturdays for team that that have to line up against him and block him. Like, come on, man. Like, like, like with him coming off the edge, now I really could tell my secondary if if I'm not a man-to-man team, I know he's gonna get in the backfield. Hey, we're gonna we're gonna play a little bit more man because we got a guy coming off that edge every single time. He's gonna be in that quarterback's face.

I love Colin Simmons. Uh, I love his swagger, I love his uh trash talk. I still remember after they put a thumping on Texas AM uh last year, somebody uh he you know he he walked in, he's he's he's dripping with uh swag. He's got that leather jacket on that old school var varsity leather jacket on, and somebody asked him because uh one of the Aggie linemen said was talking smack during the week, and he goes, Who he goes, Oh, uh you mean oh he was referencing the sixth year guy for AO right sixth year, he he's a loser. Um, he says that matter, they lost, they're losers, right? That's the kind of guy you need to engage like that. Be very real. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

And and you know, we're talking about a guy that's a state champion in Texas high school football playing in Duncanville. I mean, okay, from from the D. Yeah, you can't say the soto in Duncanville. So I you know, he probably feels like he's the best player in the country. So I man, we got the pieces on offense and defense to really make a run in the CFP.
