Six Longhorns Drafted And Reactions

sprint, we're gonna run the 1600 meters. You know, we got to have a pace, but we'll start out. Six Longhorns selected in the NFL draft, 13 overall, if you count the seven undrafted free agents. You know, some people will say, wow, only six Longhorns drafted. What's your thoughts when you when you think about this class?

So I was surprised that we did not have a first rounder. Okay. Um and uh, but um I thought that our guys were gonna go, I thought more guys were gonna go uh in a draft. Um and so I don't know, man. It it felt like um some guys should have evaluated better. And uh, but you know, the way we did last year, I think we did it really well, and uh it was a little disappointing to me, but I was happy to see those six guys go.

Well, the undrafted free agents, uh Jack Bullmeister, the punter, goes to he signed an undrafted free agent contract with the 49ers, Travis Shaw, DT, the Ravens. Uh Mason Sipley, our guy, and uh, you know, he's he he knows all about hard grove roofing. The kicker goes to the Saints. Matthew Caldwell, quarterback, brought in last year for depth purposes as a graduate transfer goes to the LA Rams. Uh Jalen Gilbo, pretty good defensive back, goes to the Panthers. Cole Brevard, DT to the Chiefs. Ethan Burke from Westlake made some big time plays for the Longhorns through the years. Defensive end goes to the Ravens. And you look at the ones who were drafted. One seventh rounder, Jack Indries, the tight end. He earned his way into the draft. DJ Campbell, that nasty old lineman. I mean, he was he had some penalties throughout his career, but man, he brought the nasty in the old line, round six to the Dolphins. Michael Taff, round five to the Dolphins. Trey Moore, defensive linebacker, that little hybrid position, the graduate transfer from UTSA. Also to the Dolphins. All three of them will be joining Quinn Ewers. So it's the Longhorns and South Flow. Yeah. Fourth round pick uh goes to the Chicago Bears. And the highest drafted Longhorn was Anthony Hill. And he goes to the Tennessee Titans. And he got a weird jersey number, but when you think about it, in Oilers Titans history, the jersey number he's going to be wearing is pretty significant.

That was one of the only numbers open, but then I did some research on a number and I seen there was a uh a legendary linebacker that wore it. So now, you know, I gotta hold up to the tradition. So I'm gonna just try to work hard every day and try to just reach the level that he reached. That's Keith Bullock.

So I didn't know, I didn't exactly, I don't know exactly who they got, uh, but I heard ram rumblings about them. Um so this was the test if that Michael Parsons trade worked. Right. Yep. Michael Parsons. And uh, and so uh people are saying that they came out on the good side of this after all.

Yeah, so they got a first round draft pick from the um the Packers, right? And then they got another one next year, right?

That's true. They got and it's it's paying off.

It's paying off, yeah. So uh, and then they didn't lose too much production on uh on defense. I mean, you never know as to what if if Michael was still here, but I don't think that they lost too much production on defense, but they they there was a whole lot of upside to their draft class.

I I I think so. And you've got young talent, speed, length, um, you got everything. So you know they got seven picks working from the bottom to the top, wide receiver Anthony Smith. Got some they they they focused mainly on defense, which they need to focus on. They couldn't stop anybody at times. Uh on the edge, LT Overton, cornerback, Devin Moore, uh, a big tackle. They didn't need a tackle, Drew Shelton, and back-to-back edges, just Sean Barham, and then Malachi Lawrence, which I really like. But they traded up a position to get a DB that we've seen a lot. We've seen a lot, Caleb Downs from Ohio State, and we've seen him since he was a sophomore because Texas has played Georgia and Ohio State quite a bit recently, and the playmaker, Michael Irvin, gave his take on getting Caleb Downs having to land. I'm sure, well, let's face it, Caleb Downs definitely thought he'd be selected much higher than where the Cowboys' position was in that first round.

A lot of people trying to say, oh, Caleb is falling. I was like, no, no, no, no. You fall to other teams. You land in Dallas. You know what I'm saying? I said, Caleb is landing in Dallas. So what were your thoughts when you start with it?

You love to see, you love to see your guys go. My guys promote say I was happy to see him go and everything. But I mean, I felt like I should have been picked earlier. So, but the excitement my parents have, the excitement I have about playing for Dallas, it replaces all that, a little bit of competitive anger inside of me. It takes it away a little bit. So excited to get to work. At the end of the day, there's no better team to play for.

That younger generation, uh, and I'm not saying, listen, I'm very objective. You're objective. Stevie and I are both cowboy fans, but we try to be objective and not show it. What I'm trying to get at, what Caleb Downs said, that younger generation, the Cowboys organization, the America's team moniker, it still resonates. And I mean, when you saw him get selected, there was a an exuberance, if you will.

Yeah. Yeah. It's um it's I know the Cowboys hadn't gone to a Super Bowl in a long, long time, but uh what Jerry Jones has done with the branding of the Cowboys as Americans team, uh America's team, and um just the uh mystique around the Dallas Cowboys has been phenomenal over the last 20 years. So it's um it and that that that brings uh obviously it's a target on your back for everybody else around the league, but when you get drafted there, you feel like you're drafted to something.

Well, I honestly, if you look at what they did last year, and I'm not just being the the overconfident guy, I'm just saying that there it wasn't bad. I mean, they they made some progress with Schottenheimer in his first year. Yeah, that's what I thought. Um so my emotions are still detached. I'm not going to uh my happiness on a Sunday or Monday or Thursday is not gonna depend on what the Dallas Cowboys do. I'm just gonna say that. It's too much. I'm not just no. Stevie, you you know in the NFL, it

Cowboys Draft Class And Caleb Downs

doesn't really it doesn't matter what size school you play at, they're gonna find you and then they'll invite you to the combine. You know, all these schools have their own combine. Well, Stephen F. Austin's uh lower division one, you you know the drill. It's FCS. Um, but there's always people drafted from NAIA, division three, division two, FCS, FBS, power four, power five, whatnot. Well, now total, Stephen F. Austin has had 39 lumberjacks drafted in the program's history, which is a pretty good number. But Charles Demings, a cornerback, he was projected as high as second by some second round, all the way down to fifth, and he was selected in the middle round by the Minnesota Vikings, and he was offered twice two different offseasons in I. Portal, come to us, go up to FBS, uh Big 12 schools. And he chose to stay a Stephen F. Austin. I mean, this is a DFW kid. He chose to finish what he started, and you know what happened last year. They finished in the Elite Eight of the FCS playoffs. Well, this kind of shows his personality and his kind of attitude. He's got a little bit of that dog in him, but he he's he's not lacking confidence. This is his interview with one of the Minnesota Vikings media members.

You know, I am blessed with every breath to be in this position. And I know the people who want to be in my C raps around the world twice. I feel like I can run in Minnesota right now. game. We knew that. And we understand why. I'm not a big fan of spring games. But what's your thoughts on the horns post-spring camp going into the voluntary workouts of the summertime?

Um, I I feel really good. Um there's a few guys uh on the uh offensive line, defensive line that's gonna work real hard this summer. Um, but it feels right to where where we are right now. We're gonna have a really good uh summer workout program. I talked to Tori Becton a little bit about that. That they're we're gonna um get some guys faster, uh, build some guys up, uh uh get a little weight on um some guys. But from what I saw in spring ball, man, I feel really confident uh about the season, but that's me. You know, I'm a little biased. Um so uh uh you got wingo and you got Cam, and Cam probably gonna be the number one receiver, but you still gotta watch out for Wingo, and then you got Smoke in the backfield, and then you got Cooper in the backfield. Um, and then you got the gunslingerslash runner and Arch. Our offense is gonna look phenomenal, right? And then on the defensive side,

we have Colin Simmons gonna uh be on the on the edge. He's gonna be perfectly fine. Uh, but man, it I I feel good about the defense, I feel good about the offense. Uh, we just gotta work a little bit on the interior offense and defensive line. So uh that's it for me, man. I I I think the summer workouts are gonna be gonna just uh elevate this team even more if we stay locked in.

I agree with you, and and but my my concern, I think a lot of people uh is the development of the offensive line, which took some time last year, and um you know they're losing one piece and they gained some and then and the portal two and with Connor Robertson coming back, you know. But when you're I I think from the center and all the interior pieces, that's the one area that I'm still concerned with. It was the area I was somewhat concerned with going into last year. Um you lose a guy like Taff. I mean, that's a field general right there. They got talent, a ton of talent, they're stacked. Um but you definitely are you let me say tell you this. So they've got seven home games Texas does, and perhaps the nation's toughest schedule.

I mean, yeah. And it is pretty tough. We gotta go to Rocky Top, we gotta go to Death Valley, um, we gotta go to AM.

Um we got OU in Dallas, Ohio State at home.

Ohio State at home, so it's gonna be a really tough schedule. But um, I think we can get it done. Uh I like the way our offense is playing, man, or or the way they played in uh the offseason. And as long as we lock in, I feel like Texas put it all on the table this year, man.

So let's be honest. They can afford to lose a couple of games if that's on the schedule, you lose two. Yeah, I think you get in.

I think that's what happens. I I think they can afford that. All right, Texas baseball. You've got uh as we're recording this, uh, they're playing the midweek game against a team that ended their season in the regionals last year. Not supers, the regional, uh UTSA. Uh Texas right now, top five in the country. Uh they won another SEC series. And if you really want to tell the story, I think a beautiful story is the nuances of baseball, in particular college baseball. That weather delay at Texas AM, which eliminated the third game because of weather, I think it will be a blessing for the season art has because it moved the Sunday starter Dylan Vellantes all the way to the starter. The next week, and it paid off. Dylan Vellantes was like the freshman pitcher of the year last year in the SEC and in all America. And he is dominant. And the way they handled Mississippi State on Friday night last week, then on Saturday they lost, came back, and took the series on Sunday. I think they got the rotation. I think the bullpen's coming together. This team has power. And I'm just telling it like it is. But they they're cool, calm, and they've got power, and they've got a just a good mix uh of chemistry on that team.

That's good stuff. I hadn't had a lot of time to watch them or had a chance to watch them uh very much. Uh I will jump in when the SEC tournament comes around. So um, but hearing nothing but good things about the team, um uh the way they're gelling, hopefully we just peak at the right time and keep it keep it going.

Baseball's very streaky. Yeah, it is. If that bullpen really comes together, I mean they've got they've got the makings just starting to show with the closers. If that all comes together, Texas will at least be in Omaha because that's what it's all about. You've got the power, you got the lineup, you got your pitching together. Um, I think they've got enough in them. If they were to lose a game, let's say in a super regional, they can come back and win it in the best two or three format. Um hey, one big thing. Uh the Greater Austin Sports Foundation, I'm on the board there. It is so cool. We had I hosted the part of our banquet, our fundraising dinner last week with the high school kids. We had six girls finalists for the scholar athletes, six boys, and amazing. All those girls, man, have tremendous scholarship offers. But on the boys side, you know, you had Caleb Crenshaw from Anderson. He had a lot of great talent. Well, the winner it did something his father did um way back, and and it's pretty cool.

I think I should put them up behind me, but I felt an aura like that when I was in I was down first baseline at Wrigley, not Wrigley, at um uh Finway Park.

First baseline. And you know, the the seats actually face the outfill right on that line. Yeah, it's funny. So you have to turn your head to look uh look in infield, and then uh and I can talk about this all day, but the other aura um place that I went and uh had and watched the game was um Wrigley Fill, Underneath the Overhang. And so um I get my family tickets to that game, and an old man who has season tickets, he's writing his stats down, his stat book and everything. He looks over at my girls. Yeah, he looks over at my girls and says, You know how cool your dad is to get tickets underneath the overhang? And they're like, Oh, we don't care. Yeah, and so um it was fun. My wife goes, we I go and buy them all Cubs hats, and uh my wife goes and gets a socks hat. And the old guy looks at me and looks at my wife and looks back at me. He says, There's always one. So I love it, man. Cubs stadium with uh a socks hat. And the cool state I got like I told you, I can go on and on about stadiums. The coolest stadium I've been into, it was an it's it's it's just very, very nice stadium is uh in Baltimore. The Orioles or the yeah, Orioles game in Baltimore, and that was really special because I uh I took my dad and we were four rows behind this. Yeah, four rows behind home plate, and uh it was um uh Aaron Judge's first game back off of IR. Oh my god, for the guys um and and got to see him uh play up close and personal, but it was with my dad, so it was pretty special.

That is special, yeah. That is very special, you know. I speaking of special, I had someone very special to me uh send me a pic. Uh they were uh on in the green monster seating. Oh wow in the off season, and it was raining, and she sent it and the coolest thing, even an empty historic venue. Just I could almost smell the video. I mean, it was because I've been to a lot of stadiums, but I have not been to the jewels yet, yeah. The historic jewels, yeah.

Um the other thing, um, when I was little, my uh my uncle, who's not no longer with us, took us and drove us by um Dodger Stadium. Oh, and yeah, Cavaz Ravine, yeah, and so I really want to go back and actually um uh go to a game inside the stadium.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then a few weeks ago, last month actually, I was outside of um St. Louis Cardinals Stadium. Yeah. Yeah, Bush Stadium. And and they they really they really lean into that Bush thing, man. Don't we all? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then um uh I really do like the whole it's it's gonna go away eventually, and it actually should, Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals. Their stadiums is in the same, they share a parking lot, right?

And so uh I like it up there, but um, I think they're gonna put the Royals downtown Kansas City, and then they're gonna put um the Chiefs in Kansas City, Kansas, and not Missouri anymore. So yeah, the Chiefs are gonna go to Missouri side to the Kansas side instead of Missouri side.

Interesting, yeah. Yeah, that's interesting. Uh that's one of the loudest, top five loudest stadiums I've ever been in. Yeah, um, and the royals ballpark was ahead of its time, yeah.

Stevie Lee, a lot to be grateful for and a lot to be positive about for everybody because there's a lot of negativity around us all the time. But uh the only negative thing that I can say, and I'll let you, I'll take, let you take the lead on this one. Hey, it is we're still in the first full week of May, and I just realized I haven't fully planned out what I'm gonna do this summer for all we're all I'm gonna visit. Yeah, tell me something good, my brother.

Something good, man. I'm so excited and happy that I get to fly to Kansas City, Missouri tomorrow and pick up my daughter. Awesome. She's gonna pick me up from the airport, and we're gonna get on the road to drive back to Austin. So uh, she's home for the summer. It's summertime for her right now. It's not summertime for her little sister yet. So she's still got a couple more weeks of school. Um, it's never summertime for mom and dad because we still work. So so uh my oldest daughter is gonna be home for the summer now, uh, starting tomorrow night. So I'm so happy about that. That's something good for me. I'm gonna be selfish this week and just kind of keep it on me right now because I'm pretty happy. I'm pretty happy.

Yeah, you should, brother. Yeah, I'm I love your family. I think uh it's a beautiful family, and in the way you guys operate and spend time, but you also let those girls grow and be independent, but all at the same time, you're still embracing every moment you can with them. That's awesome. 100% that's awesome. Um, you know, there in an episode, I'm not gonna reveal my personal life, but I like relating to people. So um, I recorded an episode with a friend of mine that I actually worked with and in college, I had a lot of jobs. I mean, and some some of them overlap, but one of them that always overlapped was as an intern and found a way to make money being an intern for a TV station while I worked these other jobs and go to school. Um, one of them one of my last semesters last spring in Nacadochis was at a place called it's no longer there, Liquor Mart. A gentleman by the name of Aaron Amsler worked with me. That's how we met. And when I finally came back to Austin uh in 2012, it was 2013, I believe, or 14. I uh uh Aaron Amsler was uh he's a Liberty Hill football parent and just a parent. Met him there. So fast forward to now, he has started his own bourbon called Double A Bourbon. Um about to edit that episode and drop it here in the next few days. I'm gonna let it promote for about three or four days, double a bourbon, and it has a significant piece to it that's more than bourbon. It's a significant story, and there's a group called the Double A Legion. It's men who are seeing the image, not I'm saying figuratively, seeing their reflection of how they are damaged. We're all damaged as men, damaged as people, all of us, but it's a program how to become a better man through getting going moving through avoidant attachments, avoidance, whatnot, anxiety, and seeing the vision of life and the truth. That's what this double A bourbon represents. Good deal. And I think it's a good parallel to mental health awareness month, which uh may is. Yeah, so that's something great, something good, and we'll have that episode here in the next within the next week, and we'll see. We'll live stream it and we'll backtrack a number because uh this is 520.
